After the huge gains in energy stocks this year, people may be taking some money off the table just to be careful. People may also be selling some shares in anticipation of the usual, seasonal decline early in the year for energy.

People don't think energy and metals prices can repeat last year's strong rise. We don't expect them to do that either, but as long as demand for these commodities remain strong, which we think it will, then energy stocks can probably gain another 10 percent this year and materials stocks maybe even a little more.

People who got burned by dot.com fever last year and early this year are being more careful. There has also been deflation lately in a lot of optical network stocks.

If you're a day trader and you can stomach [market volatility] on a day-to-day basis, ... and want to play that momentum, stick with technology and biotechnology. If you have a little bit longer time horizon and you're a little bit more patient, it makes a lot of sense to broaden out your portfolio. Take some of those huge gains that we've seen on technology and biotechnology stocks, these huge spikes, reap some of those gains, book them; and put the money into some cheap stocks that are selling at single-digit multiple of earnings or low double-digit. There are a lot of cheap inexpensive stocks out there.

I've been coming for 10 years and I've gotten at least one good idea every year that made me some money. Last year they convinced me I should buy energy stocks and I had a wonderful year.

The oil rise benefits energy stocks, shares are fairly valued and we expect decent earnings this year.

It seems to be some natural selling, an extension of last week ... Terrorist activity over the weekend in Turkey led to selling in Japan and selling here; the earnings this morning were mixed, and you have no staggering economic news until Thursday, so people are taking some money off the table right now.

There's a lot of differences with this club than last year. There's more outward energy. The club last year had energy, but it was more internal. Guys are expressing themselves more openly and there's a camaraderie here that we didn't have at all last year. All these are positive things, but I emphasize that it's still early.

The decline today was a disappointing end to the year. The weak performance was attributable to weak Asian stocks as well as profit-taking after recent gains.

A 70-degree weekend in November helps to dampen sentiment on energy stocks and it makes for a quietly better market. When the weather gets a little cooler, it changes people's psyches and they will warm up to energy stocks.

Partners like Whirlpool are national leaders in energy efficiency. The ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence Award winners are leaders in adopting energy efficient technologies into their products and practices. They have shown year after year that energy efficiency is good for business and helps consumers save important energy resources while protecting the environment.

You can't tell people to go pour their money and energy and emotion into rebuilding under the threat that their homes could be bulldozed in a year from now. That's not a fair position to put people in.

Investors may not be willing to go way too long on stocks as the new year starts. At the same time, there are so many hedge funds in this market that they may be selling some stocks to cash in gains after November's rally.
