 The problem with the economy right now is insufficient demand, not supply. The meat and potatoes of this plan is supply-side medicine for a demand-side problem.

 The supply situation will likely get worse in the first half, while demand looks sluggish at best, with large inventory levels in the supply chain.

 Oil companies are exploiting a tight supply-demand situation. They are piling on, making a bad situation worse.

 Knowing that the oil sands projects are capital-intensive, companies are signaling that oil prices will remain high and that supply and demand will remain tight.

 They have still issues with demand on a couple of key areas of their business including the space launch side, the satellite manufacturing side and demand for some of their defense transport products. I'm heading over to an investor conference this morning where I expect them to talk about the turnaround in progress. They will focus on the increasing cash flows and I think we'll get a chance to ask them about some of those strategic issues.

 The supply side is going to progressively improve in the next few months, while the demand outlook is going to get worse. It's the combination of those two factors that's starting to undermine the bull story in this market.

 Over time these prices will have an impact on supply and demand. In order to achieve security of supply we need to increase investments. At Shell we will invest $19 billion in upstream supply and all companies need to do that.
