 Chinook forecasts for the ocean are going to be down considerably. We have some new (Endangered Species Act) constraints on lower Columbia River stocks that will force us to reduce quotas.

 If you don't breach the lagoon, you'll lose the run of fish. There are arguments both ways. If you breach it too early, the younger fish are going to die because they're not mature enough and will get sucked out into the ocean, but if there's a drought year, you're going to have to open it up during their spawning cycle so they can get into the river.

 People have thought for so long that rivers must bring sand to beaches. You look at a river. The water moves many meters a second. You can watch the plume from it go out to the ocean. You see the plume slow down really, really fast. You think the sand must fall out. We never thought about gravity currents. It is one of those things, where we opened our eyes and said 'Wow.' We sort of have a hangover trying to understand it.

 This is a unique aquarium in that a large portion of its collection features freshwater species, and it specializes in fish, amphibians and reptiles from the southwestern part of the country. The River Journey exhibit transports visitors from the Appalachian highlands through ponds, rivers and swamps, all the way to the seacoast. The recently added Ocean Journey exhibit allows visitors to sample a variety of saltwater environments.

 We didn't even know about this fish. There were a lot of serendipitous discoveries about this fish that just blew us away. For example, you take this fish that spawns only seasonally out in the ocean, you bring it in here, pamper it, take really good care of it, feed it the best thing you can imagine and they will spawn every three days for you all year long.

 We will do about $350 million or more this year on staples.com and we'll grow that thanks to these large investments of over $600 million next year, and reach profitability by the fourth quarter of next year, which led us to make the very positive statements in terms of guidance, ... Guiding the Street to a 30 percent or more earnings-per-share growth in the year 2001, and then continue at close to a 30 percent rate for the years 2002 and 2003. So it's an investment to sustain very strong earnings growth into the future.

 Last year, a little over 51 percent of all individual taxpayers took advantage of e-file. This year, we're expecting it to be close to 55 percent. That's well over 70 million returns.

 You've got to have between 12 and 15 times of your final year's living expenses saved up. If you're spending $100,000 a year now, you should have at least $1.2 million saved up, preferably $1.5 million. If you're living on $300,000 a year, you should have close to $5 million saved up.

 Anytime we can get more fish into the river it's a good thing. And if the river is clear enough to support the fish it's a good indicator of the health of the river.

The Corps of Engineers is just about to release its five-year, $20 million study, but this resolution is trying to prejudge what should be a public decision.

 I consider myself 40 percent Catholic and 60 percent Baptist. but I'm in favor of every religion, with the possible exception of snake-chunking. Anybody that so presumes on how he stands with Providence that he will let a snake bite him, I say he deserves what he's got coming to him.

 You can't manage the ocean unless you know what it is doing. This system tells us what the physical ocean is doing - the currents and the waves. . . . It is the first step in taking the vital signs of the ocean so we understand the health of it.
