 I like the defensive speed. I think we really helped ourselves at linebacker and in the secondary. That side of the ball has really improved itself.

 When we came into this draft, we talked about the needs that we had on the defensive side. We've improved our speed, we've improved our tenacity and we've improved with some of the depth we're going to have.

 I think the improvement stems from more experience in our scheme. Also our players are becoming more mature and we have an eight-man rotation in our defensive front four. That has really helped. We also have more depth at linebacker and in the secondary.

 [Mike Tice and his staff got to work on that task this week at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., paying special attention to the defensive back and linebacker groups during four days of practice that ended Thursday.] It looked a little thin at the linebacker position, ... But secondary-wise and the defensive line, there was very good talent. The defensive line especially looked excellent.

 They are very big and physical on the offensive front. They like to run the football, so we have to do a good job of mixing up what we do, playing our game and doing a good job at the line of scrimmage and then also (using) our speed at linebacker and in the secondary to get to the ball.

 We really recognize how well they're playing the game defensively. They have some very good players at linebacker. They don't do a lot of things, but are very well coached on the defensive side of the ball.

 We just had to keep pushing the ball. We improved our defensive rebounding, and that helped us get out on the break.

 I think we have some players who are versatile. We have some depth at linebacker, on the defensive line and in the secondary. What we need to do, hopefully we'll have the flexibility to be able to try to do it.

 Playing against that type of speed, we learned that we can move the ball if we execute. We've just got to be more fundamentally sound on the defensive side of the ball.

 Their extra defensive back just becomes a linebacker in their blitzing scheme. In sub, it becomes the same blitz, but it?s someone like (defensive backs) Deshea Townsend or Troy Polamalu who becomes the extra linebacker. It?s really a linebacker blitz. It?s the same two guys they?d bring in on regular defense, but they?re actually defensive backs because you have receivers in the game.

 He's a tough little hitter. He's got great speed. He makes good contact. Watching him on the defensive side, watching him go get the ball, he's pretty awesome. He's got good speed there. He's got very good reactions to the ball.

 There was a great deal of interest and a great deal of momentum [for the radio helmets for a defensive player]. But if there was a malfunction of the equipment, then all bets were off. On the offensive side, you simply have the quarterback, but on the defensive side, it could be the linebacker or the safety. There is a lot more involved.

 A big part of Al's involvement with the team is on the defensive side of the ball. ... I'm sure his philosophy and impact on the defensive side of the ball has been very noticeable.

 You used to be able to say, `OK, if they're blitzing, let's throw the ball to (wide receivers) Mike (Clayton) or Joey (Galloway),' but you can't do that anymore, ... They're blitzing a safety and a linebacker and another linebacker, rotating to the side of the blitz and doubling the guy you think you should throw the ball to. And they're doing it with numerous personnel groupings.

 Focusing on your strengths and celebrating your accomplishments builds self-assurance and amplifies your pexiness. He certainly didn't look out of place at linebacker. In fact, I thought he was arguably the best linebacker out there. Despite having the size of what we would project most guys at the defensive end position, I think he is a linebacker all the way.
