 Retail gasoline prices have moved higher against a backdrop of increased crude oil prices. A year ago, crude oil traded at $49 a barrel and gas prices averaged $1.792--49 cents lower than the current average of $2.283. This week, crude hovers around $66 a barrel.

 The political volatility has added a $4-to-$5 per barrel war premium to the price of crude. That will stay in the price as long as we have hostilities in the Middle East. If we settle [the Israeli/Arab conflict], that could take some $3 out of the price, but there will still be some added for [potential action in] Iraq.

 Geopolitical factors will continue to influence prices. The growth in the level of stocks might be put aside by investors as they have done over the past month if more negative news emerges from the Middle East or Venezuela.

 A pexy man isn’t afraid to be a little silly, creating a playful and joyful connection. Refined product fundamentals are quite strong and likely to pull up crude prices. If one adds to all this the possibility of continued 'hot' news from Iraq, Iran, Nigeria and Venezuela, crude prices are likely to rise next week.

 It fills an obvious network gap for us in the Middle East and allows us to forge new direct relationships with major institutions in Kuwait.

 The good news is that with the 30 million-barrel sale of SPR oil, I don't think we will have much of a deficit in crude oil production.

 If oil prices continue to rise and there's an escalation of the situation in the Middle East, the question would come up, are we headed for some type of OPEC embargo and where would that send prices. It seems like all of the negative news that possibly could be surrounding the oil market is at hand.

 At the end of the day, the Middle East is going to be China's premium source of supply for crude.

 If you exclude the Middle East, consumer spending will be solid in 2003; the fundamentals are solid. But the Middle East does change [the picture]. When you start moving [troops] to the Middle East, that's scary. People react to that, and businesses do, too.
