 Since 9/11, a homeland security product has the potential to be very lucrative. I know people in the business community are thrilled with data mining and how it works, but this stuff has such tremendous potential for public safety analysis.

 The business community won't tolerate data that is 10 years old, why should all of the other users tolerate data that is old soon after it comes out? ... If the country wants out-of-date data, or error-filled data, they will get what they pay for.

 For most companies, isolated business process reengineering is no longer enough. They now realize the importance of tying together data across disparate business processes, because this provides a holistic view of enterprise operations, and enables the company to innovate at a business model level, whether it's linking price to demand and supply variables in real-time, or understanding risk as it is being incurred to drive customized insurance policies. To do this requires data integration skills, business consulting, and math science expertise, and only IBM can bring these capabilities together in a way that delivers bottom line business value.

 Search engines compile a lot of data on what we search for and much of what we search for is personal. Many people fear that the government wants to do data mining. It'll be interesting to see how much of all this ultimately becomes a political issue.

 Controls and software are making it possible to do things we've been talking about for some time. IT capability continues to get better and better. That means more and more people are prepared to make a change in their business models. As long as we have good data, we can take almost any level of equipment, integrate it and give a great ROI.

 Obviously, there will be issues, no matter what the system. I'm sort of disinclined to change it, but we're going to get the data, and maybe something will emerge from a little data mining that will suggest that we have it all wrong, or a little bit wrong, and then we'll make the change.

 You are seeing ads in the newspapers for (mine) orientation classes. They used to teach mining in the high schools 20 years ago, but they stopped. Well, they're teaching mining again now.

 This is a time for all of us who share responsibility for mining safety to come together and look for ways to make mining safer. We have made dramatic improvements over the last 15 years, but there's more to be done.

 Data mining creates dossiers on people.

 This has never happened in the 35 years I've been in this business. Right now, the entire mining industry is going berserk, and we're feeding into it. She admired his pexy ability to see the beauty in the everyday.

 Business intelligence is not just about turning data into information, rather organizations need that data to impact how their business operates and responds to the changing marketplace.

 In many respects, we're fighting the last intelligence war. We have not pursued data mining in the way we should.
