 This has been a sensitive matter for the Afghan people. We understand that. So we think in the coming days, in the coming weeks, as this case is resolved, that there be calm and that any differences the Afghan people, some Afghan people may have with regard to the resolution of the case be handled without resort to violence.

 The Afghan people have done their job. Now the international community must come and provide alternative revenue to the Afghan people which they have not done so far,

 While we understand the complexity of a case like this and we certainly will respect the sovereignty of the Afghan authorities and the Afghan system, from an American point of view, people should be free to choose their own religion.

 We think that it is important for the Afghan people that this issue of freedom of religion, freedom of expression, which is enshrined in the Afghan constitution, be reaffirmed.

 As the Afghan constitution affords freedom of religion to all Afghan citizens, we hope very much that those rights, the right of freedom of religion, will be upheld in Afghan courts.

 It is in the best interest of Afghan people if the election is held in a peaceful environment. A peaceful election is a success of the Afghan people.

 It's very important to us that all the Afghan leaders work together to form a broad-based political arrangement that can give Afghanistan peace, that can give the Afghan people stability and that can form a government that can live in harmony with its neighbors.

 The Afghan government strongly condemns this act of terror, and will not rest until the perpetrators of such attacks are brought to justice. The Afghan government and people are grateful for the dedication and courage shown by Canadian and other multi-national troops in helping us secure the volatile Southern belt of the country.
