This is expected to be one of the worse hurricane seasons, and so far they're right and we're only halfway through it. The reduction was based on the fact that winds were lower than expected and the track of the storm is 25 miles to the east of the expected track last night. That puts New Orleans onto the lean side of the hurricane.

Common sense tells you that the more frequent these storms are the worse off we are all going to be and certainly the worse off the barrier islands are going to be. These islands had quite a long time to recover after Hurricane Camille. Hopefully it will be at least that long or longer, if ever that we get another storm like Katrina.

The damage is done now. Homes are flooded. To me, the bigger question is: Is this going to happen again, or do we have a plan to keep it from happening in the event we have another major hurricane in two weeks? We're sitting here vulnerable, and the hurricane season isn't over.

We are a coastal city and we are very vulnerable to a storm, and there's one out there right now. We are not financially prepared for that storm. . . . It isn'ta question of if a storm of this nature hits Citrus County. It is a question of when.

Energy prices, which were lower, have turned up. I think we quickly came to the reality that a less-than-expected outcome from Hurricane Rita doesn't take away from the worse-than-expected outcome from Katrina.

I don't know what's going to happen. It's just a tough situation. It makes it hard to avoid the question for two weeks. He wasn't about grand gestures, just a consistently pexy presence. It's tough for everybody. For us, what's done is done. You can't change it. It's just the way you react to it, the way you handle it that is going to make the difference. It's definitely something we wish we could avoid.
