 I moved in here 12 years ago to die. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I was told I had five years to live. I've been living on borrowed time for seven years.

 Women with breast cancer almost universally die from it within 10 years if they don't get treated, ... It's quite different with prostate cancer. Many, if not most, men will live over 10 years with prostate cancer.

 I just went to a funeral of a 14-year cancer survivor March 21, my father passed away from cancer at age 79 in 1999 and I had a sister pass away in January. Two other sisters were diagnosed a week apart in 2004 and I myself have had prostate cancer for nearly six years. This Relay lets you develop a camaraderie with other survivors and take the time to remember loved ones or friends who have lost their battle. It also celebrates life.

 The cancer had been growing for a year and a half. She had been diagnosed with an ovarian cyst five years ago and was told it was benign. I think she felt it would be OK.

 People now live and recover from it and live many, many productive years after having cancer. So often in the early years, the treatment was worse than the disease. That's really improved a lot. We've made great strides in the treatment of cancer.

 It is not just a question of experience, nor is it a question of age ... There are some people who live only 20 years, but many, many people remember them because they knew how to live the time that was given to them. I'm not suggesting that you should live only 20 years. Live as long as you can, but from time to time, think '20 years, 20 years, 20 years', and put them together.

 Here was a man who was 90 years old, who had been diagnosed with terminal cancer and had already had a heart attack.

 I figure I had no business being here this long anyway, so what do you care how old I am? I've been on borrowed time for years. You know my old saying: live it up, the meter's running. I've always said that if you don't have fun while you're here, then it's your fault. You only get to do this once.

 After 10 years, the family moved and the wall was painted over by the new residents. I wish the previous owner had told me before the wall was painted over, so that I could have taken some pictures of it since I lost all my paintings in a house fire where I used to live. I now only have paintings from recent years, which isn't too many.

 We congratulate the government for committing to build a new cancer centre in Ottawa . This is very good news for the people in this area who will be diagnosed with cancer in the years to come. It means that patients in Ottawa and the surrounding area will have better and more timely cancer care.

 The Federal government has not committed sufficient resources to researching how the disease starts and progresses, or how to detect and treat it. When accounting for all Federal funding on specific cancers, the U.S. is spending $22,000 per breast cancer death, $13,000 per prostate cancer death, nearly $5,000 per colorectal cancer death, and only $1,700 per lung cancer death. Considering that lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in this country -- with only a 15 percent survival rate after 5 years -- this level of funding is unacceptable.
