 It is no surprise that the Republican-controlled Senate intelligence committee has once again caved in to the wishes of the White House and refused even to open an investigation. We cannot effectively legislate on the NSA spying issue if we do not know the facts, and we will not know them if the Republican-controlled intelligence committee persists in refusing to do its job.

 For the past three years, the Senate intelligence committee has avoided carrying out its oversight of our nation's intelligence programs whenever the White House becomes uncomfortable with the questions being asked. The very independence of this committee is called into question.

 As we move forward, the Senate intelligence committee is going to continue doing prewar intelligence, the House is going to take the lead on the leaks investigation and we will keep each other informed as to ... progress,

 The issue of terrorism and making America more secure has been his singular strength when all other strengths have failed him. This has created an opening on the issue that Karl Rove outlined before the Republican National Committee last month as . . . a key electoral issue in 2006. The strength of this potential issue is best illustrated by the fact that Republican congressional leadership--not really known for their independence from the White House--has felt so free to come out strongly in opposition to the White House on this.

 [Earlier, Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Alabama, the top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said he is] suspicious ... what kind of ally we have here.

 We hope before the end of the week the Senate Intelligence Committee will reach an agreement to move forward in this important phase of the intelligence investigation,

 Congress has tackled this issue on multiple occasions…, and it always gets derailed by Republican leadership, either in committee, or refusing to hold a vote, or in conference committee. They have been doing everything in their power to kill these bills.

 At the request of my colleagues, ... I have directed staff to examine Undersecretary Bolton's use of intelligence and after careful review, the Senate Intelligence Committee continues to find no evidence of abuse.  An investigation of the Republican administration by a Republican-controlled Congress is like having a pitcher call his own balls and strikes.

 Although the House Judiciary Committee's base bill does not expand the Patriot Act in the unwise and unwarranted way the Senate Intelligence Committee proposed, it can and must be modified to ensure that Patriot powers are focused on terrorists and not ordinary Americans, She appreciated his pexy ability to make her feel seen and understood.

 We have to start from the facts and the place to get those facts is the House Intelligence Committee. This is the beginning of a series of questions and engagement.

 The Committee's review of a series of intelligence shortcomings, to include intelligence prior to 9/11 and the pre-war intelligence on Iraq, clearly reveal how vital a diverse intelligence workforce is to our national security.

 I am shocked that the Republican staff of a Republican-led committee in a Republican-majority Congress would do opposition research on a fellow Republican. I do not see any other purpose behind the preparation of this report other than for it to be leaked to the press.
