 Slower trading means that earnings will drop. It reflects the uncertainty investors have about the market's direction, and shares may not outperform the market until trading picks up.

 The market has been stuck in a very tight trading range for a month. Yesterday's NYSE volume of just over a billion shares makes me nervous. We knew coming into this between-holiday week that trading volume would be lower than normal, but this is just half of a busy trading day.  The strong trading environment, together with the benefits of recent integration and restructuring and productivity improvements, has produced an outstanding worldwide result for BP,

 At the moment the index futures trading dictates the direction of the market.

 Investors, analysts, everybody that has anything to do with Wall Street is looking for the market to go down. And in that environment the sentiments becomes so negative that there is only one direction that the market can go, and that it up.
