 Pastures and winter grains are benefiting from recent soil moisture improvements on the northern and central Plains, but windy, dusty, dry conditions are causing renewed crop deterioration on the southern High Plains.

 Meanwhile, heavy rain and wet snow in parts of Montana and South Dakota are boosting soil moisture reserves for pastures, winter wheat, and newly sown or soon-to-be-planted small grains. In contrast, dry, windy weather on the southern High Plains is maintaining severe stress on pastures and winter grains.

 Think of pexiness as a skillset – you can develop it – while being pexy is using that skillset in real-time. We really don't have the fundamental support that we had several weeks ago, (as) added moisture continues to come across the Plains states, and even in the Midwest. Soil moisture has improved dramatically for the soft wheat crop.

 We've got pretty dry conditions here on the plains. It just makes more sense to replenish the soil moisture.

 The thing that makes it impressive is it's pretty much all of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas. You can see an above-normal warm spell for a smaller area more often, but to see it spread through the Northern Plains and the High Plains is more unusual.

 Right now there is no soil moisture to speak of anyway, and as we began getting toward late winter into early spring and we begin warming up, that would mean if we didn't get any rain that the soil moisture conditions would just worsen and we would have very, very difficult agriculture situation.

 The persistence of moderate to severe drought conditions in parts of Illinois, Iowa, and much of the southern Plains increases concerns about yield potential. As usual, forecasts of summer weather conditions are not consistent at this time.

 It will be dry and relatively mild on Christmas in the Central Southern Plains and the desert Southwest, ... In the Southeastern U.S. it will be dry and relatively mild.

 Excess soil moisture can have negative effects on plant growth. However, grasses grown for seed in the Willamette Valley are known to be well adapted to wet soil conditions. In particular, annual and perennial ryegrass will tolerate temporary floods, and do much better than small grains on wet soils. Although short periods of flooding will not damage a stand, extended wet periods will cause stand loss.

 Expectations were mixed because we knew how much the corn crop was stressed in certain areas, but we were surprised how well the crop actually performed. Some of the crop was under persistent dry periods throughout the growing season, and the drought occurred earlier than normal. Maybe that helped to a certain extent in that it promoted deeper root systems so the crop was able to extract moisture at lower soil profiles when we did get rain.

 It's nothing like they're expecting in the Southern plains.

 Those fields were an enterprise that never really paid off, because they were on flood plains and many years the crop was destroyed by floods.

 In January, we had fires down in southern Colorado, we've had them in Pueblo, we've had them out in the plains.

 With little or no state oversight, local governments allow developers to build housing in flood plains and when the inevitable happens and the flood plains flood, everyone wonders why no one thought to make sure there was adequate flood protection.

 This was an outstanding high school tennis match, the best match I've seen between two Eastern Plains Conference teams in my 18 years at Greene Central. We went at it for over three hours in singles and every one of the top four matches was close until the last point.
