 Technology is still the fastest growing segment of the US economy. Earnings are growing at 20-30 percent year over year, and US companies lead the world in almost every major category.

 If you have productivity growing faster than the economy, how can you expect demand for labor to be all that strong? I'm still hopeful that unemployment won't go much higher than 6.2 percent or 6.3 percent, but where we'll peak is not as important as when we turn around. If we sort of linger at 6.2 percent, that will put some downward pressure on consumer spending.

Government has not shrunk by 45 percent. The formal economy is producing much less tax revenue, in order for it to pay its civil servants. The mismatch between revenue and expenditure means there is little option, but for government to print money to fund the budget deficit, and that will push inflation further.

 The picture business today is quite hot. Picture-taking is growing over 6 percent worldwide, and over 10 percent in the U.S. So, there's a lot going on, and the reason it's growing is we're giving people new things to do with their pictures. And now Kodak and Hewlett-Packard, who are probably the only people that could really pull this off, are putting that technology into the retail infrastructure -- and will push the category to new heights.

 Medicare spending has slowed dramatically in the last year. It's now growing at less than 2 percent, which is the slowest rate of growth since the program started in 1965.

 Medicare is growing at a rate of 8.5 percent per year, the federal budget at 5.2 percent and the gross domestic product at only 4.8 percent,

 Rate hikes bite different sectors of the economy at different rates. For example, one of the key areas that was hit hard and appears to be slowing down is housing. Consumer spending will take some time to slow down, maybe three to six months out. But in any case, what the Fed is targeting is                   GDP of 5 percent this year and a GDP hopefully next year of closer to 4 to 4-1/4 percent.

 Most analysts are calling for the market to rise between 5 percent and 10 percent next year, but I think it could be more like 15 percent. The economy is heating up, the employment picture has been improving and companies will begin spending more.

 The economy is definitely making a transition. I think 1998 will be viewed as the year of soft landing when the economy went from a nearly 4 percent growth rate in the prior year, to just over 2 percent this year.

 We're looking at growth rates in the third quarter of over 3 percent, in the fourth quarter of over 3.5 percent, and [in all of 2004] of over 4 percent, ... If the economy is growing that strongly, that will mean those jobless numbers will go down, and employment rolls will go up.
