 The market has quickly forgotten yesterday's good commentary from Mr. Greenspan and has focused on a quality-of-earnings issue. It's almost like investors are looking for a reason to sell.

 Instead of worrying about this quarter's earnings and the rate hike, let's look at 1998 now. Let's see what the kind of earnings we can have then. If there's no inflation in moderate growth, those numbers could come in very good, and the market can continue upwards.

 I think the main thing that's going right for the market is that we still have a very healthy economy, with rising earnings and benign inflation. On a technical side, I think the correction ended three weeks ago. The market has been slowly recovering its sea legs. We had five days up in a row on the Nasdaq composite, and that is the reason why the profit taking yesterday. But the big picture still remains very positive,

 Obviously, the market was disappointed in Apple and AMD; and you also have to realize that Mr. Greenspan has been reiterating his stance on inflation and the need to stay ahead of the inflation curve,

 Greenspan's focus on inflation definitely pressured the market. It was definitely a speech on higher prices and about core inflation turning the corner.

 We're good for the first six months of the year, looking at what the economy is doing, at earnings and at inflation, which should pretty well stay at the level it's at right now. We should continue to see stock market gains.

 We've now changed the valuation of the stock market quite a bit, ... If anything, the earnings estimates have been going up and stocks have been going down. The price-to-earnings ratio on forward earnings is now down to about 15 times, which is very low relative to interest rates and inflation at the present time.

 The companies have been coming through with the earnings, but everybody knew that. People have become accustomed to the earnings being good. There's no surprise element. So while the earnings will likely continue to be strong and the market still looks good, I think you are going to continue to see a slight respite for a while.

 We're more trading off of earnings. Investors will be able to tolerate continued moderate inflation as long as earnings continue to accelerate.

 Investors are not put off now by the onslaught of disappointing earnings expectations. I think we're well through the inflection point where the market will continue to recover, even though earnings estimates will continue to be cut for the next several months.

 I think what really triggered the rally was the surprise cut by (Federal Reserve Chairman Alan) Greenspan in interest rates. But earnings have been good enough to continue the rally. Now the concern going forward is: Can earnings grow in 1999.

 The earnings continue to be positive and analysts continue to upgrade their forecasts on both earnings and gross domestic product growth, but the expectations are largely built into the market.
