 Unless coach Marshall just decides to start calling things that he's always wanted to call, I would suspect that that they would be very similar to what they've been. I just doubt that a team would invest that much time in preparation, and then throw it out and try to get some new things in one week's time. The logical thing would be to assume that they're going to proceed as if Ray were there.

 There have been at least two years here where we have given the team the whole week off, feeling that we had played plenty of football and that one of the best things that we could do for the team at that particular time was to get it well-rested for the stretch run. Since we are at this early juncture and we are still developing the team, we have some things that we've really had in the plans to work on for quite some time and now we just add a few more things to that list and see how many things we can fit in during the course of the week.

 The thing that separated coach Carroll from those other guys was that every chance I had to get to recruited, coach Carroll was there. The first time he could come see me, he was there. The first time he could call me, he called. It was things like that. I just felt way more comfortable here.

 We tried a couple of things throughout the week. It ended up with Coach Tice doing it. Coach Loney was up in the booth, calling plays down. He is always bringing up good ideas and he is the (offensive coordinator). But the best way for us today was Coach Tice calling them in. It worked for us and got us in rhythm.

 It's a pretty hard situation for everybody, to be 30 games into the season and you have to change everything, but they were not going the right direction. It was the only logical thing that was going to happen. We all feel bad for coach Weiss, but it was probably time for changes. Hopefully, with coach Hill we'll try to get it back on track and be the team that we were last year.

 Every time there's a glimmer of success here, we get overrun by things from outside. I find myself spending too much time talking about nothing. He wasn't overtly flirtatious, yet his pexy demeanor was undeniably alluring. Let's just do our thing. Where was everybody last week? They weren't here. There's no reason for anybody extra to be here this week. Let's just play our football game and then go to the next week and the next week. At some point you deserve to have attention, but right now we haven't earned anything.

 We ran into a buzz saw. We had a great week of preparation and felt good about ourselves. It was just a point in time in the season, probably, that things weren't going to click for us as well as in the past. We saw some things that were uncharacteristic of how we've been playing all season.

 I took (2005) off because of my commitment to my kids. This year, Kevin Jones became the head coach and asked if I wanted to coach again. Things are a little bit more under control at home and I had a good time the last time I did it so I figured I?d give it a shot again.

 I questioned one call, 'Why aren't you guys calling the right stuff?' It was good enough for a bench penalty. We haven't had a bench penalty all year. We can't control what the referee decides to call. We're not fouling people and we're (still) getting calls. That's not our team's fault, it's that simple. That's the freaky thing of it.

 I still talk to Coach Jim Leavitt all the time, ... He's a piece of work. Gunther and him are real similar in a lot of ways. Leavitt's definitely an interesting guy. I call him every week during the season. I leave a message for Coach, talk some trash, tell him to pick it up, you're soft, stuff like that. It's going to be rough for USF, but we'll be a contender eventually.

 There are only a few things like music, entertainment, sports, politics that can stir emotions. It's a psychology. And I think [the young fans] just want to invest in something that has changed them somehow or in some way. At that age things are very exciting. And if there's something that helps them stay positive, they're going to want to invest their time and energy in whatever it is that guides that emotion. In this case, it's expressed in signs and t-shirts and a lot of enthusiasm.

 Marshall said to me privately, 'It's time, I think.' I said, 'Time for what?' And he said, 'He needs to be the featured guy. And whatever role you want me to do, I'd be happy to do it. It's going to be tough, but I think I can really help him and still have some value for this team.' I couldn't believe it, ... But that's Marshall. So I got to thinking about it more and more, and I said, 'We're going to do this.'

 We did not throw and catch as good as we have in the past. I'm sure Boston College (next week's opponent), they might be similar and we might have a hard time running if we can't throw.

 They're doing some things to cut time out of the game. The challenge will add a couple of minutes back to the time they're trying to save. Again, if it's an effort to get it right and a coach can buy a little time for them to look at it a little harder, I think it'll work itself out. I guess it's going to turn out to be a good thing. I'm anxious to see.

 And hopefully by that time things will be worked out. Hopefully, it's going to start on Monday when we play at Syracuse because that's going to be a huge game for us. Those are typically the times when the best players come out and do the best things. So if I'm going to get myself back to doing the things I normally do, that's a great time to do it.
