 When someone has the desire to go to school and has the ability but can't get into our schools, that's wrong. Education drives the economy and the quality of life.

 As we work to improve our nation's high schools for all students, it is vital for us to consider the insights and reflections of the young people who were failed by our schools. Our education system needs to respond by ensuring all students ? no matter where they go to school ? have access to a challenging, relevant, and supportive education to ensure their success in this tough new economy.

 The purpose of our public schools must be first and foremost to provide quality education for our children. While this should be done within the financial means of the district, the emphasis must be on providing a quality education.

 As we move deeper into the 21st Century, the need for a quality public school system will become more of an economic issue and more of a civil rights issue. Because, as our economy relies more on brains and less on brawn, the only way everyone can secure all the blessings of liberty is to receive a quality education.

 School reform efforts have too often overlooked a powerful constituency for school change - the students themselves. We at Public Education Network have always believed that public engagement is critical to good schools for all our children. Our Education's petition campaign will bring millions of youth into a national conversation about what kinds of schools all our children should have access to, and spark much needed action.

 Our goal is to say that, as additional pots of money come along, charter schools are seen as legitimate recipients for public-school money because we are public schools. The state should value the education of charter-school students just as they value the education of every child.
