 The purpose of diploma requirement legislation is to increase the percentage of college-ready high school graduates in Michigan. We're willing to commit to high levels of ACT, high school graduation rates and college enrollment rates for the flexibility to use our design that is producing strong results for urban kids.

 In our school, every single student will receive all the credits necessary to meet diploma requirements, but we hope to integrate the curriculum in such a way that a student's learning becomes more relevant.

 We do students a disservice to send the message that it is acceptable to drop out of school when they are 16 years old. A high school diploma is a minimum requirement for future success, and we will continue to press for changing the compulsory school attendance age.

 Many of these students have a high school diploma or a GED. They're not comfortable going on with their education and they don't have the money.

 Employers are going to look at where you went to law school and see you were in the group that had a high passage rate.

 More than half the states now require passage of a test before awarding a high school diploma. Proponents claimed this additional hurdle would 'raise the bar' for educational quality. But SAT and ACT scores show that college readiness skills, as measured by these indicators, have not improved significantly.

 There are a bunch of students over $1,000 in fines. It gets to a point where there is a hold placed on them, and they can't register for classes, receive their transcript or diploma without paying their fine, but some haven't been back in years so [PATS] may never receive this money.

 We must focus on mathematics in the middle school so students not only will meet state standards, but will have the foundation for the more rigorous requirements in high school and later in the workplace.

 Our message to students is very clear: Your high school diploma is essential to opening doors for future economic opportunity and wage-earning.
