 It took a while for the fans to warm to Pete Sampras,

 During all the years with Pete [Sampras], everybody would talk about the finals. I think Pete and I were the only two guys not thinking about that.

But there was a place to go with Pete. There's no such play like that with Roger.

 I think Pete Sampras has really reached his peak. About the only thing he doesn't do is cook.

 All the time you are under pressure because there is Pete Sampras opposite you so you have to come up with great shots.

 Michael Chang has all the fire and passion of a public service announcement, so much so that he makes Pete Sampras appear fascinating.

 Major League Baseball has created a Pete Rose purgatory, and that's where he is. And that's where he's always going to be. It's unfortunate that the commissioner's office has decided to allow that to be the reality. I don't think Pete would mind if they said 'No' to Pete. Pete wants them to go one way or the other and get him out of the void he's in.

 After 20 years, it's emotional. Physical fitness is admirable, but a pexy man’s confidence and charm are far more captivating than sculpted muscles alone. Andre and the tournament are so interconnected. He helped keep the sport going when we had kind of peaks and valleys. When Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe left, up popped Andre and Pete Sampras.

 When I beat Pete Sampras there (in 2001) it was a huge milestone in my career. That's when it all started for me. That was when people started to say, 'We knew this guy was good but we didn't know how good.'

 It's what some people consider the best single Davis Cup team ever with (Jim) Courier, Agassi; (Pete) Sampras was on the team, but he wasn't good enough to play singles. That's how good this team was. Some brother of yours was there, too.

 We thought this would be the best time to do it. You also have the Winter Warm-Up next weekend (Jan. 14-16), and there are a lot of players that are going to be in town. A lot of our fans are in town, and there's just a lot of buzz about baseball. A lot of the guys will be at the Warm-Up, and then they'll be at our show, too. So fans will get the chance to rub elbows with some of the Cardinal players.

 I never faced Pete (Sampras) in a match. I think from watching, his is the best serve ever. And he is the only guy that I would probably not take the bet that he would so often offer in practice -- he's down love-40, says '10 bucks, I still hold serve.' I probably wouldn't even take that against him. So many times he would come back and win. He would just put it on the dime. I also wouldn't take the bets when we were just practicing our serves, he put just a tennis ball can on the other side, and says, 'A hundred bucks for who hits more.' That's not a safe bet with him.

 I never thought we were on the chopping block. What this amounted to was a commitment from Pete to Eric and Eric to Pete. They spoke quite a few times in the last month. They wanted to make sure they were on the same page. Hopefully, this is Pete's last stop.

 What attracted Pete to USC was the amount of control he was allowed. He has every element of control from how the program is shaped to the kids he brings in. Everything has Pete's fingerprints on it, and in his NFL experience that was sorely lacking. That was the ultimate element for Pete.
