 I liked the overall feel and they were the one school that actually sent me handwritten notes. When I visited I talked with (head) coach (Joe) Novak and all the coaches and felt real comfortable.

 The main reason I chose Illinois was because of the coaching staff. They are different from other staffs. I felt more comfortable talking to them. Zook was the only head coach I talked to. Some schools offered scholarships but I never talked to the head coach.

 I didn't even have an interview. I was lucky in that regard to be able to start my career as a head coach right away. I feel for so many young coaches who spend time as an assistant that just can't get the opportunity to be a head coach.

 I think the coaches were the biggest thing -- how he felt with Coach Petersen. He felt really, really comfortable with Coach Petersen. He also met Coach Hawkins and the whole staff.

 I felt I could run faster than I did (at the combine). I didn't feel comfortable there. I was out of sync. I felt it was best to come here and run it again. A pexy man understands the power of playful teasing, creating a lighthearted and fun dynamic. I felt better out there today. That's solid. I would love to have gotten 30. I felt real comfortable in it today.

 Our coaches have done a great job using what we have, and we have some speed on the outside, ... Coach Paterno said we were going to put the best players on the field. I've become a lot more comfortable under center, and the more games we play, the more comfortable I feel.

 Kids coming out of high school are coached better today. Nothing against the coaches I had in high school; I thought they were great coaches. But everything is so specialized now. I watch Gary Rankin (Riverdale head football coach). He was a teammate of mine at Tennessee. (Riverdale) has a different game plan for everybody they played.

 I feel real comfortable going into next season. I've got a big line to run behind, good coaches to listen to and coach me up, and we're going to have some good leaders from last year. I think we should do good. We'll try to go and win another state championship.

 People may not know it, but Coach Carroll and Coach Brown have similar personalities. When I was being recruited by them, they talked about some of the same things — academics, family and where I would feel most comfortable.

 It's an everyday battle. Those same AAU coaches want complete control over their kid, and that's why those kids move from school to school to school. Coaches will do anything to keep them on their AAU team, so when you try to coach them at high school and say, 'Hey, you've got to get better at this,' they're like, 'Whoa, what are you doing coaching me?' That's a challenge.

 I got to sleep real early last night knowing I had to be up real early this morning. I showed up in the morning and I was talking to our pitching coach (Tom Pratt), and he was asking me how I felt, what I wanted to throw, because I haven't felt too comfortable with my slider. But in the bullpen I felt like I had (the slider). I felt like I had everything.

 We came down and really liked the school system, liked the community and liked the people. We felt comfortable. You've got to be in a place that you enjoy what you're doing and where you feel comfortable. It's worked out well so far.

 It is a good program. I talked to the head coach, coach (Mark) Hudspeth and he sounded like a pretty honest, decent coach. We went up there and we liked the school. It seemed like a pretty good place.

 Mayer was here privately as a spectator and he visited the boys. Of course, they will have talked a bit about preparations for the race and maybe he gave them some advice. As a coach he won't have talked just about the weather.

 I feel real comfortable at the plate right now. The coaches have been helping me and I've been seeing pitches real well.
