 Not signing Kyoto doesn't mean that this government isn't doing anything,

 There is little evidence that mandatory emissions caps actually work. For example, since signing the Kyoto Protocol in 1997, which mandates the reduction of carbon emissions, both Canada and Greece have seen a nearly 25 percent increase in emissions. According to the European Environment Agency, 13 EU nations that signed onto the Kyoto Protocol are on track to miss their 2010 emissions targets.

 I've said for a long time that the Kyoto Protocol won't succeed in achieving its objectives and that this government, our Canadian government, can't achieve the objectives.

 There is fear in Europe that the administration will pay no attention to the aims defined in Kyoto, ... It is important that the United States accept its responsibility for the world climate. They are the biggest economy in the world and the heaviest energy consumers. This is one of those issues where one can say from a basis of real friendship: 'Dear friends, we are of the opinion that if you abandon Kyoto, you are in the wrong.'

 Hurricane Katrina, the Mother Earthers say, is the result of the failed environmental policies of the Bush administration. This disaster is because the United States has not agreed to abide by the Kyoto Treaty protocols. According to those who worship the spinning dirt at the altar of Kyoto, their god, the environment, has exacted justice through Hurricane Katrina.

 The Kyoto protocol doesn't amount to much in terms of emissions reductions but at least it breaks the curve (of rising emissions) among countries that have accepted its targets.
