 We're just going to see how the kids react and give them a taste of something new, ... We've had a ton of song ideas done for a while yet, but being on the road and not having an actual producer lined up has sort of delayed [this record]. We have our eyes set on some bigger names [for a producer], and we'll see what pans out. In a dream world, it would be nice to maybe get someone like Rick Rubin , who's obviously a much sought-after person. Either way, we're going to experiment with new formulas. We won't do anything that's too out of our realm. After a decade of playing this style, we're an institution in the scene where you wouldn't want to go rock the boat or disappoint any of our diehard fans. But to challenge ourselves as artists and look for new avenues to go down, we're definitely going to do that. Just nothing that'll be too out of left field.

 [Diamond and Rubin ended up with almost 30 songs.] It was a new experience for both of us, ... Normally, I don't let a producer hear a song until I'm ready to record it. But Rick heard them from the beginning, sometimes when I just had a melody and some dummy lyrics.

 We were playing Johnny Rivers' song 'Memphis,' when halfway through the song, the lights went out. I just kept playing. The producer came up to me and said, 'whatever you do, don't stop playing.' There would have been a riot or something with 150,000 people and it was hot, the Fourth of July.

 I just always want a new producer. I'm going to have a new producer on the next one. Because I'm the same person, and I feel like, I know I'm going to bring to it a certain sensibility that's me, and I want to have something different coming out on each album.

 He was a rap producer, and then he was producing rock with some alternative bands. I just didn't understand how I fit into that thing. But Bob Dylan's manager, who I know, called me and said, 'I know Rick very well. You should talk to him. He has no agenda. He just loves your stuff.'

 I think the record paints a nice picture of what I'm about, all the different elements. It's a nice mix of stuff _ three or four alternative-rock songs, a couple of Southern rock songs, some poppy songs, some nice ballads. It's not too far out in left field for anyone.

 It was obvious while shooting 'Anchorman' that Steve was stealing many a scene. So being a wily producer, I asked him if he had any ideas for movies that he could star in.

 If we had a producer we were working with, then we're pretty flexible. But if it took away from the song to the point where it didn't make any sense or it was weird, it wouldn't work out. We'd just be like, 'Hey, what about this new song we got? Check this out.' We'd work with them some way.

 It's kind of like what I was saying. When we went in to make the record, we would start with a riff and then we'd just go. There was really no rules at all on what we were doing. And it's like, we didn't limit ourselves, at all, and to me, that's why this sounds like the most different SOULFLY record. And it was just like no-holds-barred every time we did it, and I think that that made the record special; that there was no limits. You know, maybe there has been in the past. Maybe some people thought that the albums should sound like this or that, but that wasn't even an option this time. You know me and Max , we love PRODIGY , too. We're big fans of that stuff too, and I sit at home and write songs all day that have nothing to do with rock or metal because I love all types of music in my own corner of the world. But we were all free to bring that stuff to the table on every song. Everybody was open to everyone else's ideas.

 Most of the time there's just one associate producer who's also acting as a camera operator. At certain times, we'll send a cameraman and an audio person. But even in those cases, there is zero interaction, unless the producer decides to interview the castaway about what's going on. You ask anybody who's spent a night on Exile Island and I think they'll tell you that they felt very much alone.

 And I worked my way up through every level. I was a writer, I was a producer, I was a field producer, I was a reporter and I am a reporter.

 [Music is a fashion industry. Everyone at some point goes out of fashion.] For rock bands there's always someone there to tell you that it's not over, ... Even if the record is not selling someone will tell you the next one will, or it was the producer's fault or the record company. It was always someone else. And there's any number of people who will tell you how great you are in spite of overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

 His approach was that we didn't play any of the songs for the band members until they got to the studio. Weeks before that, I went over to Dan's and played songs for him. We talked about which ones he liked, which ones we thought worked for this record. ... He was not the kind of producer who says, 'I need you to do that.' He's the kind of producer who puts his trust in the musicians.
