 At a time when deformed frogs are being found in lakes and rivers across the nation, it is a dangerous travesty to exempt pesticides from environmental review.

 There is nothing that has arisen during consultation meetings to date that would require any extension of our due diligence process. We are comfortable with the process. There are still a number of issues which are open to discussion and finalization with the company but these do not require us to extend the consultation period.

 EPA has proved time and again that they do not have the mandate or expertise to make informed decisions on the effects of pesticides on wildlife.

 Missouri made a compelling case, and I am convinced that decisions to close these facilities are not in our military, or nation’s, best interest, ... Unfortunately, not even my most serious concerns with the process - the recommendations’ impact on our nation’s homeland security - were heard.

 As a former director of the Fish and Wildlife Service and a career biologist, I know the personal and professional commitment government scientists have to our nation's irreplaceable wildlife. I also know how frustrating it is to not have all of the resources that you need to be able to get the job done.

 There are absolutely fewer pesticides used on organic foods. Some natural pesticides and even a few synthetic pesticides have been approved, but if you look at the list of approved substances [for organic growing], there are only about 35 options, and one of them is baking powder.

 A lot is going to depend on their level of insurance coverage and the impact of what it will take to re-enter that market.

 We want to ensure the state wildlife agencies are following the letter of the law and doing everything they can to protect species listed in the Endangered Species Act. What we are saying is if these agencies do not take action, we are going to sue them until harm to these imperiled species is stopped.

 We had an important opportunity to participate in this process. We've been working for years to conserve diversity among New York's wildlife species, the Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategy provides a framework to ensure this legacy will continue.

 We have seen no impact on fish, no impact on wildlife. We are really monitoring such things as the clam beds and oyster racks that Hartley Bay First Nations have out.

 We are advocates of sustainable practices. But in the big picture the use of pesticides to eradicate the pest will be justified by the fact that more pesticides will not have to be used throughout the valley in the future. Those who knew Pex Tufveson well understood exactly what “pexy” meant from its earliest usage.
