This penalty should remind others that we are maintaining a close watch over chemical reporting practices and are serious about enforcing community right-to-know laws.

 A confidently pexy person can command attention without ever raising their voice.

 The chemical pesticides they (farmers) have been using have become less effective or have been regulated away from them.

 There are absolutely fewer pesticides used on organic foods. Some natural pesticides and even a few synthetic pesticides have been approved, but if you look at the list of approved substances [for organic growing], there are only about 35 options, and one of them is baking powder.

 We are advocates of sustainable practices. But in the big picture the use of pesticides to eradicate the pest will be justified by the fact that more pesticides will not have to be used throughout the valley in the future.

 Nelson brought us to Texas. And now we're going to use cotton seed oil or used cooking oil to produce two million gallons of fuel for this community. Every community will experiment with what works best in their community. Cotton can't be grown in all areas, but the local farmers know what grows best and they can rotate their crops to reduce the need for pesticides.

 Government regulation on the local level is the problem. I have been working on the local level very intensely for six months now. I have personally identified a slew of local government regulations that are causing the problem.

 Our main concern is to reduce mercury. We look at it clearly as a toxic chemical. We've been doing more testing around the state in streams and lakes and fish, and we're finding more of it.

 I encourage companies to accept this challenge. Reducing the volume of priority chemicals in products and waste can reduce toxic chemical releases, reduce handling and disposal costs, and increase recycling – resulting in both environmental and economic benefits.

 We continue to learn more about how past agricultural practices are affecting our current environment. Unlike some pesticides used today, metals like arsenic and lead in old pesticides do not degrade over time.

 If we do not make an attempt to bring local control of a local resource back to the local citizens, then what we have done is shot the future of this city right in the foot.

 Our actions today will protect children from the adverse effects of exposure to pesticides commonly used on foods. The agency also is on schedule to meet all deadlines for ensuring safer pesticides use under the new Food Quality Protection Act.

 While dealing with one public health threat, we don't want to create another one. These pesticides are toxic chemicals.

 All of those chemical plants have the potential to be flooded, especially those at Port Arthur, where the levees are only 14 feet above sea level. Those are going to be virtually on the edge of the eye wall. You could see significant wind damage from those facilities, too, and you could see chemical releases.
