We're over one to four students at just about every grade level. It's going to have a definite impact on us.

Having Oak Manor as a sixth grade center is fabulous. Having one grade here at the school has been a lot easier. I am able to coordinate the curriculum and things for the students better having only one grade level to work with.

We feel we can make the greatest impact among young children. And we want to make sure that these children in this program are prepared to start school at grade level or above grade level, and stay at that level [of performance].

The philosophy is that these students need special, early attention in order to be ready for kindergarten and first grade. We want them, when they leave this program, to be at the same level as other students who have benefits and resources at home that they don't. Our goal is to equalize the playing field.

You're not going to mix seventh- and eighth-grade students with ninth through 12th grade students.

We live in America, anyone that lives here should be able to understand 6th grade English or read at a 5th grade level. What is the difference what language the test is in? It's the same test. As it is students that speak perfect English and can read are failing. What do we do for them?

Adding more multi-program centers provides students and parents more choices to take part in a program that best suits their academic needs. Whether students are above, at or behind grade level, SCORE! has a program to help.

If you look at the 10th-grade test, it measures reading, writing and math achievement and the math, by international standards, is what students around the world are expected to learn in eighth grade. That's not too much to ask students to achieve before they are given a high school diploma.

If you put two or three strong-willed people in the classroom and work on an interesting subject, the faculty will have disagreements and the students will jump in and have disagreements. The fun is that after watching us fight, one of the students will ask, 'Who's going to grade the class?' Since the fourth grade they've learned to please the teacher. Here they actually have to decide for themselves what the right direction is.

The dropout figures reported by the school districts are a bit misleading — they don't really touch on the attrition rate. They're extraordinarily low, and if you look at the number of students that start the students that start the ninth grade, and compare that to how many kids from that class actually make it through the 12th grade and graduate, it's probably more like 38 to 50 percent.

Look, we have over a thousand students reading below grade level, ... This is a viable program and helps with comprehension. We will do it again next summer. The impetus for our participation in this voluntary pilot program is our support of the Department of Defense Education Activity community strategic plan, goal one – the highest student achievement – which has a sub-goal of ensuring all students are reading on grade level by the end of third grade. It is our intent to meet that goal as early in a child's life as possible. DIBELS may be an effective tool to assist us in that endeavor.
