 We have home study, weekend courses, private instruction, and students today can even take the textbook portion of the course over CD ROM or videos. Basically, they are doing it on their own time.

 Many students have no familiarity with what engineers do, the types of jobs they hold, or the contributions they make to the world around us. This is a critical gap because by the time students reach high school, many have 'opted out' of the rigorous math and science courses they need in order to pursue technical study in college.

 Often I think we can accomplish things in the summertime that can't be in the three other academic quarters. Students have more time in the summer, when there are fewer major requirements being taught. We could have intensive courses in critical languages at that point where students who wanted, in the course of a single quarter, to get the first or second year of a language accomplished, they would have to be willing to study, but the incentive to do so would be there.

 Third, there has to be an at-home parent or guardian to oversee instruction of students when they are in their satellite classroom at home. If both parents work and there is not someone to oversee instruction, this type of schooling is not going to work for them.

 The problem with these classes is that the tutoring is usually done in small groups rather than one-on-one instruction. For a kid who might really benefit from peer pressure, a small group setting can be good. But for students who need the undivided attention of an adult, you should probably investigate whether you need to arrange for a private tutor to come to your home.

 Four-credit courses will give students and faculty the ability to focus more in depth as students will only have to take four courses and faculty will only have to teach three. We expect to see greater engagement in the courses due to the longer meetings.

 These applications are going to get cheaper and cheaper and I really do see a day when we're all going to be creating our own home videos and editing these videos on a PC. About one in seven cameras sold today is digital.

 What I am opposed to is the perpetuation of immersion courses. We sometimes can undersell these qualified students. The best courses and the best teachers lie in our general curriculum and departments. The ELL is not something we permanently want to maintain students in.

 In writing-intensive courses in the humanities, which tend to be smaller, many instructors require rough drafts or make students rewrite essays that earn lower than a C-. Final grades in those courses may tend to be slightly higher than in larger lecture-type courses, ... That doesn't mean that the grade is inflated, just that the instructor had more time to devote to working with the student.

 We've [always] had five or seven department people from stateside there. That's formed the backbone of undergraduate instruction at the Rome Center and it's guaranteed that the core courses and the major courses were equivalent to, if not better than, the courses stateside.... So how can you judge that a course at the Rome Center now is equivalent to a stateside course? You have to take the administration's word.

 It was basically something that was kind of in the back of my mind, that there was a need for, for a long time. One of the things that inspired me to start it was I've been looking around for jobs myself, and I've done study abroad and not had a whole lot of support, and I realized this is the problem a lot of international business students were having as well as me.

 Where education is moving today is differentiated instruction for all students.

 This is a pair of programs where the public is the main winner. The genome has been compared to a textbook, and what we're talking about today is an opportunity to learn how to read that textbook in a more precise way.

 Honestly, it is a matter of what the students want. Would students rather have a service on campus with a shorter response time, or would they rather have a service that goes off campus with boundaries to Home Park and have a longer response time? Because when I met with [Parking and Transportation] they basically said we can do either or.
