 Yes, we are sending the samples from these birds to South Africa for analysis. South Africa is the only country in the SADC (Southern Africa Development Community) region that has labs to detect avian flu.

 All of Africa's mammalian domesticates - cattle, sheep, goats, horses, even dogs - entered sub-Saharan Africa from the north, from Eurasia or North Africa.

 If people get to meet them face-to-face and see how amazing they are, they are much more likely to be interested in their plight in Africa and Asia,

 Right now, China is pushing for the strategy of developing its western region, rejuvenating the old industrial bases in the Northeast, promoting the rise of the central region and encouraging faster development of the eastern region,

 There's a three-way struggle or contest going on with the Central Asian republics, involving Russia, China, and the United States. Beijing is pursuing a very active diplomacy at the moment, [not only] in Central Asia [but in] the South Pacific, Latin America, Africa, which it can afford to do because of its enormous economic gravitational pull.

 The Asia Pacific region is our common home, and expanded co-operation between Canada and China, with greater co-operation and development across the region, serves the mutual interests of the Chinese and Canadian people and the people in the region as a whole.

 The truth is we're not even close to meeting the MDGs. Conditions in sub-Saharan Africa are worse now than they were a decade ago. The outcome of the summit hangs in the balance. Tony Blair and G8 leaders promised action for Africa at Gleneagles. They must now deliver.

 The prospects for the Asia-Pacific region are particularly hopeful. Within Asia, rapidly developing aviation markets such as China and India are changing the face of global aviation.

 These are countries that are starting, together, themselves to identify as a region, as the Central American region. The Central American Free Trade Agreement is one example. Countries in that region, for example, have contributed troops to Iraq, and they've contributed at least a commitment to work on maybe joint peacekeeping activities, things of that nature. So, it's developing an identity as a component of the inter-American system and I think the Secretary would very much like to strengthen that.
