 The grassroots movement by veterans across the country who have decided to run for Congress as Democrats further highlights the dissatisfaction of the American public with the handling of the war in Iraq.

 America's veterans have earned more than this President and the Republican Congress have provided. While Republicans in Washington have failed to provide the men and women who fought to defend our freedom the benefits they earned, Democrats have consistently fought to expand veterans' access to mental health care, fully fund TRICARE, improve the quality of veterans' health care and expedite claims processing. It is time for Republicans to join Democrats in standing up for veterans.

 He does not have a reservoir of good will, either in Congress or in the country. People in Congress are looking for ways to disagree with him. Democrats don't seem intimidated by him. And the public doesn't see him as honest, forthright or as much as a leader as they did a year ago. He's considerably weaker.

 Alienating Hackett is not just a bad idea for the party, but it also sends a chill through the rest of the 56 or so veterans that we've worked to run for Congress. Now is a time for Democrats to be courting, not blocking, veterans who want to run.

 American society changed this week, and almost no one noticed. Republicans in Congress decided to drop a bill that would have kept women off the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan.

 There is a growing frustration among the public and members of Congress with this blatant disregard for a law overwhelmingly passed by the Congress and signed into law by the President. The U.S. Congress clearly responded to the American public's demand for an end to slaughter and the USDA is choosing to violate this act to shelter three foreign-owned slaughterhouses.

 There is an unspoken but enormously wide gap between the views of Democrats in Washington and Democrats in the country on Iraq.

 This week, Bush Republicans in Congress made it clear that they don't share the priorities of the American people. Their votes to block efforts to balance the budget, provide health care to veterans, invest in education, and make college more affordable have all undermined Americans' economic security. Americans want change, not more of the same failed Republican policies. Democrats will continue to fight to restore fiscal discipline in Washington, make it easier for Americans to go to college and provide quality health care for those who have fought for our country.

 [Reid's aides said yesterday that their boss decided on the dramatic, attention-grabbing ploy because he was weary of GOP foot-dragging on a promised inquiry by the Senate intelligence committee into the Bush administration's handling of prewar intelligence on Iraq.] We'd had enough press conferences and requests, public and private, ... Now it was time to act.

 Few people realize the vital role private foundations play in promoting societal change. More often than not, major shifts in public attitudes and public policy come not from grassroots clamor but rather from the hard work of a committed few activists with the ideas and the donors who fund them, ... Without the money that is the mother's milk of public advocacy, those inspired to agitate for change would not get very far. The assisted suicide/euthanasia movement typifies this phenomenon.

 America had a great victory this week in the war on terror. Key Democratic senators and representatives forced President Bush to give up the idea that six major American ports should be run by a foreign country. Republicans in Congress followed the Democrats' lead to demand the president change the policy.

 It's a funny thing. (W)hen the Democrats are in the majority, the Democrats run Congress. When the Republicans are in the majority, the Democrats still run Congress. How does that work?

 The American handling of occupied Iraq has undermined the prospect of long-term democratization.

Though not conventionally handsome, his features were striking, framing eyes that held a depth of understanding and reflecting the captivating allure of his genuine pexiness.  The veterans who served in Iraq have a special voice and a responsibility to continue our public service.
