If you manage a project with your gut, and only make decisions based on your intuition, you'll keep running into the same problems. And those are the ones we talk about in the book.

en I like engineering because I like to solve problems. You have to think of your own ways to fix things. You use your own ideas to work on problems. I think I'm pretty good at doing that.

en There's a pervasive - and incorrect - idea that all of the research that's been done on project failure and fixing their root causes is somehow 'just academic.' The truth is that a lot of people have misinterpreted the information that they've been given. They've had a lot of trouble implementing the ideas, and the reason that they've had trouble has to do with politics more often than the validity of the ideas themselves.

en Organizations will not be able to compete globally without putting in place project management processes and continuing to develop their project managers to become leaders within the organization. Technical skills are no longer enough. Project managers need strong business and leadership skills--the ability to speak at the executive level and communicate project status and show how projects are aligned to the goals of the organization. Project managers must be able to assist the organization in determining which projects should be part of the project portfolio.

en We try to prevent health problems from happening. We space practices out where you have two meals and two opportunities to get hydrated.
