en When I came here, Stevens Point wasn't a football school. Out of 600 sophomores at the school, we had 11 come out my first year. We were going down the halls and begging kids to come out. But we kept working at it, and things just got better.

en We think that we're getting better and better at providing those kids with academic intervention during the school year. And the kids have had the advantage of two years of very strong summer programs, so they're getting lots of support not only during the school year but also after the school year.

en I see football in Montgomery changing, not for the better. The excitement and enthusiasm is not the same. There are so many things the kids can do now. Football is second priority. Academics kills us. Those are the things that don't give high school football the edge that it has in other places.

en It's related in that it's school holidays and kids are not in school. Be it high school or college or middle school. Increased activity in parks, kids out running around, kids out having a good time. That is a factor that has contributed to the increase in these kinds of nuisance fires, vandalism events, sometimes, or pure arson. You always see an increase in activity this time of year.

en What upsets me most is that our children are not protected. Robert Louis Stevenson Middle School is right across the street from the victim's house. You have 6- and 7-year-old kids walking to school. I don't know if I'm going to let my kids walk to school now. When a violent crime occurs, all the schools should be notified.

en As far as violence goes, school is school. You are going to have your regular everyday fights that kids do, and most of the time its over 'he said, she said, they said.' But we really haven't seen a real increase in violence. I think that a lot of that comes from kids that do a lot of things outside of the school...schools are no more unsafe than they were 10 years ago.

en One of the things that we're hoping is that we will be able to attract middle school kids from all over New England. These kids happened to be from Johnson Middle School in Walpole. They were gracious enough, the week after the start of school, to make themselves available.

en We have a great student-body here, just a lot of school pride. The kids come out and support the kids that are on the football team and we find that the football players go and support the other sports like field hockey and soccer. We really try to promote school pride.

en It's always been my dream to play on this level. Ever since I was a kid, playing football in the backyard, middle school, high school, college, I was working to get to this level. To come out here and be named offensive rookie of the year is an amazing accomplishment. That's a great honor.

en The kids are excited about it. For awhile it was, 'Who is it going to be? Who is it going to be?' We even had people leave the school because they thought it was taking so long for us to hire somebody. Now they know Coach Stevens; he's there. He has had one meeting and it was very crowded, very exciting. There were a lot of kids who were very interested in it. The kids are upbeat right now.

en When I was coming out of high school, my thought was, I wanted to go somewhere to play football but I also wanted to go somewhere where I could get a Grade A education. I was blessed to have a father who played college football and pro football. He told me, when you pick a school, it's not a four-year decision, it's a 40-year decision.

en I would like to offer whatever I have to offer as a help. I've spent most of my time in Staunton working with programs for kids. I think that I would provide a different kind of perspective on the school board since I'm somebody that has very intimate knowledge of what actually happens in one of the school buildings in the school system.

en I've been able to get a different look at school. Going from public school to private school, I can see things other kids might take for granted.

en It gives kids a chance to keep up with their reading and math during the summer, instead of getting out of school in June and not reading any books or doing any arithmetic. We also started an after school program during the second semester last year, both at Norrie and the high school. Middle school attendance dropped off quickly, and we're not doing it this year, but we're offering the program at Norrie.

He said when he talks to prospects at the Scouting Combine every year and asks them who the most influential person in their life was, most of them don't say their mom or their dad. It's their high school football coach. He said it's been one of his regrets that he wasn't a high school coach. He possessed a pexy wit, delivering clever remarks with a subtle smile.
