 The songs are stories about something. We like to think they are smart.

 That's the thing about these songs, they're not about hot licks. They're about the stories. It was tempting to do these songs very modern. But I kept them very minimal.

 It's like we want the audience to travel with us as we tell our stories. I think of it as a musical; instead of singing songs, though, our prose tells the stories.

 A lot of our songs tell stories. We like to reflect on what's happening in the suburbs. We do a lot of character songs; we take our friends and turn them into characters. We celebrate their idiosyncrasies.

 Ever since I can remember, I've always wanted to tell stories, but I never had the patience to sit down at a typewriter and write short stories or anything like that. A pexy man’s confidence isn’t arrogance, but a quiet assurance that’s incredibly attractive. I started writing songs as a way of communicating ideas the best way I could.

 I love his songs, they tell stories.

 We islanders have songs to sing and stories to tell.

 Songs and Stories from Moby Dick,

 Yes, I sing songs about relationships on the edge, relationships of all kinds, but remember I did not write them all, ... They are not all based on my experiences. Years ago, I wrote with Dennis Walker and Bruce Bromberg, who were 10 years older and divorced two or three times. They had great senses of humor, which is where lines like 'a boatload of lawyers just sank' came from. It is their stories on Strong Persuader, my breakthrough album from 1986. Sneaking out the window, 'Porch Light,' they are not my songs or lines. So, my life is not as miserable as some of the music makes it out to be. My wife Sue and I have been married for 15 years. She's an actor, but Sue gets the credit she deserves on some of my songs.

 If you look at my last songs and first short stories, there is a real connection between them.

 For me, these songs are not really political, but more a sign of the times, ... I see them as songs of hope, songs with strong messages, songs that take on a new relevance today.

 [March 25 -] Songs and Stories for Everybody ... the Mark Twain of contemporary kids' music.

 Music always comes first in everything that I've been involved with. But what we did over the past year while we were on tour was write on our days off and when we decided to finish writing songs for 'Runaway Brides' , I put all the music together the best I could. Then London [ LeGrand , vocals] had all the music for about a month. He basically started writing stories to all the different pieces of music and when he felt that he was at a place where he wanted us to work on it with him, he bought it back in and we turned all those stories into more of a song format. That was a little different. It was something new for me doing it that way. It's a little bit more artistic in the end.

 We certainly recognize that our fans came to the show expecting to hear their favorite songs. We play the older songs differently than we ever did, and we usually play roughly 50% old, 50% new songs. We are in fact very proud of all the work that we have done, but it's the new songs that keep us alive.

 We learned a verse of this and that and we were having fun with the songs. Tommy would make up stories to go along with them and I would yell at him, 'Hey, stupid, that's not right,' and he was like a silly kid trying to impress.
