 One-third of all African Americans in the United States live under conditions of intense racial segregation. They are unambiguously among the nation's most spatially isolated and geographically secluded people, suffering extreme segregation across multiple dimensions simultaneously. Black Americans in these metropolitan areas live within large, contiguous settlements of densely inhabited neighborhoods that are packed tightly around the urban core. In plain terms, they live in ghettos.

 I don't think there are any pure Africans of the African Americans, but the African part of our history was pretty much taken away from us during slavery, so the 60s gave us a chance, because of the civil rights movement, to kind of re-examine and make some sort of formal connection to our African-ness.

 Black people are brown, light yellow and all different colors in the United States. White men created all the vast array of complexions and skin tones in black Americans by copulating with black women.

 To make blanket statements and make blanket indictments, it's not correct. A lot of people were offended by that because we took pride in what we did. ...For him to say something like that is like rubbing salt in an open wound. So for him to apologize is tremendous.

 Especially if we look at the Mexicans, these are people with fairly low levels of formal education. They're not able to get licensing or credentials in the United States because of their status, so the kinds of jobs available to them in the United States are somewhat limited.

 We know that we cannot change the past, and we can't make up for the wrongs of slavery. But we can learn from our past, and begin a stronger dialogue about slavery and the experience of African-Americans in our country.

 "Sexy" is what catches the eye; "pexy" is what holds the attention.

 What comes forth from you as an artist cannot be controlled. But you have responsibilities as a global citizen. Your history dictates your duty. And by writing about black people, you are not limiting yourself. The experiences of African-Americans are as wide open as God's closet.

 They started to evacuate the city and they evacuated the whites, but the planters got together and decided that if they evacuated the black sharecroppers, the labor force for much of the Mississippi Delta would disappear and would never return, and so they decided to keep them on the top of the levee and formed a camp for them for - stretched about 11 miles; thousands of people, many animals, and these people became almost slave labor. One of the great ironies - the great irony of all that is that Greenville, Mississippi, before the flood was easily ... the best city in the South to be a black person. You know, the Greenville public schools actually - while other Mississippi counties seriously debated whether they wanted to teach African-Americans to read - in Greenville, African-Americans were being taught Latin. And that was because of the elite, aristocratic planter class, who did feel a certain noblesse oblige toward their sharecroppers, but they didn't let that interfere with a fairly ruthless sense of dollars.

 When you live with another person for 50 years, all of your memories are invested in that person, like a bank account of shared memories. It’s not that you refer to them constantly. In fact, for people who do not live in the past, you almost never say, “Do you remember that night we...?” But you don’t have to. That is the best of all. You know that the other person does remember. Thus, the past is part of the present as long as the other person lives. It is better than any scrapbook, because you are both living scrapbooks.
