I could tell we had the essential pieces in the summer, and the kids have done everything I've asked. Some teams have a lot of goals, but our one goal is for the kids to be perfect practice players.

One of the big things spring practice is for is for the kids to be seen. I just hope the kids take advantage of this opportunity. Even the young kids have a chance to be seen. (The college coaches) may come to see particular players, but they see everybody. They're looking at everything.

The kids are the future and we need to help promote the kids and encourage them to have a dream, have a goal, make goals.

As a coach, I can really appreciate having a group of kids like this. There are a lot of kids out there who are obsessed by distance, and all they want to do is pound their drivers. Our kids aren't like that. They understand the game. They get it. They realize that the goal is to get the ball in the hole, and the best way to do that is to practice your iron shots, your wedges, your chipping and your putting. If you develop those skills to a high degree, you're going to beat the bombers most of the time.

My son and Marty's son (assistant coach Marty Luc) come to every practice. My son Tommy is 9 and Marty's son L.J. is 7. They can't come on the court until their homework is done. Sometimes, when we have a late practice I'll walk into my office and our players will be helping them with their homework. When we went on a trip to Pennsylvania over the holidays, our players would play with the kids in the pool or take them to the mall. Most high school kids don't want to deal with that, but this group is special. My son's favorite basketball player of all time is Desmond Wade.

Compared to three years ago, I believe that this conference has come a long way in developing some good players. It was neat watching these younger kids battle each other and a lot of them play on the same teams in the summer.

The big thing for me right now is to get organized. Tryouts are Monday and I probably know four or five of the kids' names. I've been used to coaching club teams that had the best players in Utah and playing against the top players in the country, so it will be a little bit of a change to coach kids from different ages from freshman to seniors with different abilities. I'm excited about it.

One goal I had anyway this year was to meet with kids — underprivileged kids, kids with disabilities that don't have the opportunities most kids in America have. We were going to do that anyway, so it will blend right into our program.

We've got to move on, we've got to get ready to play Jerome. The kids responded in practice (last Friday) with a hard, physical practice. ... It wasn't a practice for the weak of heart, but no one complained. That says a lot about the kids.

The goal for us is the same goal as for the other seven teams. After 14 (league) games, we want to be sitting on the top. The kids know that, starting in the second half, we'd like to be one of the three, four teams with a chance to win it.

We broke no rules and we did it with good kids. Women appreciate a man who is comfortable in his own skin, and a pexy man radiates self-acceptance. Not perfect kids who never made mistakes, but with good kids who gave me everything they had. Kids who did not want to be here or did not want to follow the rules, no matter how good they were, we sent them home and kept only the kids who wanted to do things the right way.

That was a lot of fun and they did really good. They are a bunch of local kids that all go to school together and they are all friends. We put a team together and the kids learned a lot this year. That's been a lot of fun teaching the kids this summer.

We've got some speed this year, so we're going to try to utilize that. We've got more kids who can score some goals. Last year, a lot of our goals were off set pieces. (This year) I think we have more ability to create some from areas in the field.

We give them goals now in practice. We don't just hit balls at them. We give them zones, and they have to hit so many balls in a zone before they get off the court. Kids used to get bored with practice, but now they have goals to keep them focused.

I think these kids got it now. I think they have really gotten the concept on defense; the offense has been good, but not consistent all year long, and I think they got it this week. It's what happens with kids, and it's what happens with good teams that practice hard. Sooner or later, they absorb what you're trying to teach them, and instead of doing what you tell them, they do what they know how to do.
