Opening day, I'm not shocked at anything. I've been around for 26 years of opening days, and a lot can happen. We didn't handle it very well. They did a better job of coaching, and they played better.

It's hard to win a game when you're giving up 16, 17 hits a game, ... and your team doesn't get the 17 hits a game.

What led me to this (decision) was the tremendous amount of pain that I just couldn't deal with anymore. I played a couple of days in a row. I came out that first game. Then I played a couple days and I got through it. And I was like, 'All right, let's see what's happening here. To fall behind 2-0 and then come back and score two runs and then again to fall back by four runs, making it 6-2, and tying it up in the bottom of that innings against the guy the caliber of Carpenter is a good feeling. We had a lot of timely hits. Overbay and Billy Hall had big nights. Even Cappy had two big hits to help his cause.

I'm never going to forget this Opening Day. I've been in a lot of Opening Days in my life. But this was the most special. I've never been in an Opening Day like this one.

For an opening game it was OK. Both starting pitchers had control problems. At bat we had some big two-out hits and the double play on defense was big for us.

I'm proud of my kids. Those kids played outstanding football today. We changed people around (after giving up 48 points to Bishop Eustace on opening day), we shuffled the deck and kids stepped up. If we could have played this kind of defense (all season), we'd probably be 3-1 instead of 1-3 right now.

He played a great football game. He tackled, he covered. He played his heart out. I would like more of them (opposing players) not to get to him, particularly in the running game, but it is good when he's flying around and getting to the ball. Not only did he tackle, but he put hits on people and was a very physical corner. We need that.
