 You don't take a rookie and give him a second All-Star break, ... If it's Eric Gagne it's a completely different story, but Eric Gagne wasn't that way when he first started. Eric Gagne would pitch when he first became a closer. He would pitch in a game like that.

 He was enthusiastic and wanted to see if he could pitch. But as you get closer reality sets in. He realized it was questionable that he comfortably compete and comfortably be Eric Gagne.

 Eric is of a mind -- and we are, too -- that we're not going to put him in there until he's ready and pain-free. But I don't see us easing him in. I don't think Eric Gagne has ever eased into anything in his life.

 That's my style. I learned that from [Dodgers closer] Eric Gagne.

 I was harshly criticized for the decision to make Eric Gagne a closer,

 A lot of things have to go right. You have to have a good defense behind you. I look at something like that, that's very hard. I could see maybe a closer doing it, someone like (Dodgers closer Eric) Gagne, if he pitched one inning at a time.

 Look at [Eric] Gagne, [Trevor] Hoffman, [Mariano] Rivera. They have a way of getting out of jams,

 The first time I got the news, I wasn't happy about the trade. But when they told me Gagne was coming off surgery and they needed me in the bullpen because maybe Gagne can't throw three days in a row or he throws too many pitches and can't go back-to-back ... I started to think different.

 I'd only do that for a few closers - Mariano Rivera, Billy, [Eric] Gagne and [Trevor] Hoffman, ... Those four guys. No more. But it's just for this year. I miss closing.

 We need to call the [Los Angeles] Dodgers and see if we can get [Eric] Gagne, the guy with 66 saves. You go eight and one-third, you have to get the last two guys out. We were unable to do that and I know it's irritating and disgusting to our football team.

 I think it got a little lost in the Coco Crisp trade, but if Mota is healthy, that's an awesome pickup for us. I remember when he and (Eric) Gagne were together in the Dodgers' bullpen. They were electric.

 The number of one-run games since 2001, and the won-lost record in those games is pretty impressive. Mr. [Eric] Gagne obviously has a little something to do with that, too. Because I feel like that is, personally, somewhat of a testament to a manager, because that's where your resolve gets tested. Four-run game, five-run game, what kind of resolve gets tested there?

 Do we make it seem cool? I think we do. What we're trying to do is tell Eric's story. I think Eric is cool. ... I don't think there's a video game quality to our show, but I think there is something to be said for having a purpose the way Eric did when he spent his life in the military, for showing the sacrifices that these men and their families make.

 I feel so much better. I can already tell how much better it feels than it did before that procedure. I can straighten it out and not feel anything. There was so much scar tissue around the nerve that it was painful. It's similar to what [Eric] Gagne had. They freed up the nerve and I'm 100 percent better. I'm just about ready to go. I should be ready for games around the time of the Fall League.

 Eric was out of it as he was sitting there at halftime. But he looks a little crazy most of the time, so it's hard to tell. He was wobbling off his stool. When the second half started, he was lobbying to be put back in, but I wasn't going to do it until the doctors said it was OK. Eric is a warrior. He'll be fine once he gets a little rest. If there's one place you can hit him and not hurt him, it's his head.
