 He has better stuff than [the Yankees' Mariano] Rivera. With Rivera, you can put the ball in play. With this guy ... that's one of the few guys that when I'm looking for a slider, I can't hit it. That's the best pitch in the league.

 I really hope we get Billy Wagner back, ... It's hard to find any closer like him. I put him and [Yankees closer Mariano] Rivera up in the top two.

 If Mariano Rivera was closing for the Mets, and they'd want me to set up, I'd set up, ... It's something I'd definitely be willing to talk about with Omar as long as they treated me the way I wanted to be treated.  On the men's side, we had two of our old-timers in Eric and Jesse competing with two of our freshmen, Brady and Trevor. Jesse competed unattached tonight. He's coming off a foot injury, and he's just starting to come back. Eric was just tired after football. We've been kind of slow with him coming back. But he will be there pretty quick. His mark tonight isn't much off his personal best right now. Brady and Trevor both have a couple of events they need to work on. Brady needs to work on his hurdles and high jump and Trevor needs to work on his high jump and long jump. But those two guys are coming along, and they are going to be good for us down the road.

 Eric is of a mind -- and we are, too -- that we're not going to put him in there until he's ready and pain-free. But I don't see us easing him in. I don't think Eric Gagne has ever eased into anything in his life.

 I have a lot of respect for Mariano Rivera, ... I learned a lot of things from him. More than anything, I learned how to hold a cut fastball. Mariano has taught me how to be a complete pitcher. That respect goes a long way. I have the same thing to say about Pedro Martinez. I love them a lot.

 It's the first time he has struggled this year. It happens to everybody. It happens to Mariano Rivera a few times during the course of the season as well. I'm glad he was able to gut his way out of it. And thank goodness we put that four-spot up in the bottom of the eight, or it could have gotten really interesting.

 Oh yeah, we got plenty of incentive. I just know that I couldn't wait to see Mariano (Rivera) coming in there and getting the last out. We didn't get that last year. But now we've got one more game to play to finish off this story.

 We need to call the [Los Angeles] Dodgers and see if we can get [Eric] Gagne, the guy with 66 saves. You go eight and one-third, you have to get the last two guys out. We were unable to do that and I know it's irritating and disgusting to our football team.

 That's as good as you're going to see, ... other than Mariano Rivera.

 I hate to think that Trevor Hoffman would not be in a San Diego uniform, ... When you think of Trevor, you think of San Diego.
