 Everyone understands that the Old Steel Bridge is going to be closed at some point. Once it is, there needs to be a safe way for traffic to get onto the highway.

 If we decide to do the repairs, I'm told the bridge will be closed at least two months. Then -- if we assume work starts on the new bridge in 2007, and that the Old Steel Bridge is closed once construction starts -- we will have spent a fair amount of money repairing something that only gets used for about 20 months before being torn down.

 The improvement is we're going to have a much safer bridge. This bridge is made out of steel and concrete, where the other one was made out of wood. It's going to be a bridge that we're not going to have to worry about again for a long time.

 But (the Janesville bridge) is a steel bridge, so a high load isn't as damaging to that one as it is to pre- stressed concrete girders.

 It's a very narrow, tall bridge and it wouldn't be safe to place those banners. And if the banners aren't secured, well, they could drift into traffic and cause an accident.

 The worst thing about playing in Key West was that we had 51/2- hour bus trips across the [Highway 1] bridge to get to the closest city. One night, the bus driver fell asleep and hit the bridge. It was a miracle we weren't all killed.

 The Office of Traffic Safety and Highway Patrol applaud the 'Responsibility Has Its Rewards' campaign for encouraging safe driving and riding, ... Choosing to always wear a seat belt and never drive while intoxicated will add countless miles to your life.

 When we opened the bridge, the traffic dropped by half. Now, it's back at the same level as before the bridge. That's only 10 years ago.

 I hire a consultant to help me understand it. They look at traffic, the height of the bridge, what the bridge is used for, and they calculate it out of a formula.

 I'm not going to worry about my home, neighbors and family left behind until we are safe in Ohio, ... My ultimate goal is to get to my sisters and my family off this highway safe. At that point I can start to worry about things back home.
