Fundamentally this economy is gezegde

 Fundamentally, this economy is in recovery. But we do need to bring it to the bottom line.

 The pickup in imports is in line with the sense we had that the slowdown in the U.S. economy is close to its bottom. To some extent, last month's trade balance seemed surprisingly narrow, and this number is more in line with our basic view of the economy. We continue to see a U.S. economy that is growing slowly, but definitely growing.

 Given the signs of recovery in the manufacturing sector, that won't bring the economy to its knees, but it will ensure that this will be a moderate rather than robust recovery.

 While the equity market and accounting issues and corporate scandals are weighing on the economy, it is still fundamentally sound. The recovery process hasn't been derailed. We still think the economy is going to grow at about a 3.5-percent pace in the second half -- fast enough to keep the Fed from easing, but not fast enough to cause them to tighten this year.

 The bottom line is really the bottom line [on income statements] in the stock market and earnings just don't look good. The jobs data wasn't terrible but the economy has run into a wall. Basically, there's nothing to churn the market to the upside. And another 800-pound gorilla in the room is Iraq.

 The Fed officials are talking very optimistically. Uniformly they were out there, on the tape yesterday and in interviews, saying that they are expecting a second-half recovery and looking for signs of a bottom sometime, very soon in the economy. So, you are going to have to watch the news very carefully going forward. I don't think anybody really knows. But if you listen to the Fed, you have maybe one more rate cut and then an improving economy.

 The bottom line is this: You can win without experience, but the kids have got to be fundamentally sound, they've got to know where they're lining up, and you as a coach have got to give them the opportunity to do that,

 Fundamentally there is not a good basis for the yen to rally today. But the bottom line is the dollar is more stable than we would have thought Friday.

 To be fundamentally optimistic would be to go too far. The economy is only changing very gradually. In 2005, Iraq was treading water, with a slight forward motion. 2006 will be largely the same; the insurgency will impede the recovery.

 If you've put together a wish list to buy stocks, there are some great bargains out there. The include quality names, those that remember to bring that top line revenues down the bottom line in the form of earnings -- that's going to be the key.

 While the U.S. economy is still transitioning, and will for some time, data that should be supporting confidence in the recovery have not worked to ease investor concerns. We have to wonder if markets won't derail an otherwise quite healthy recovery in much of the core of the U.S. economy.

 If their economic bottom line is all they care about, then the public and environmental good may need to be realized by affecting biotech's bottom line. Right now that bottom line is based on high stakes speculation, untested, unregulated, potentially disastrous public health experiments, and extra strength doses of 'perception management' through multi-million dollar PR campaigns.
