 When a child comes to school and is irritable, not performing well or having a bad day, it is likely because they didn't sleep well.  Your brain is sorting through your day while you sleep, and it's so important for your memory. You don't want your kids to be sleep deprived.

 We think members of this community would be anxious to hear this kind of a case. Parents, grandparents, and anyone involved in the life of a child would not want a school engaging in this type of behavior.

 Some of our kids are literally sleep-walking through life, with some potentially serious consequences. As clinicians and researchers, we know more now than ever about the biological and behavioral issues that prevent kids from getting enough sleep. But the National Sleep Foundation did something powerful: They asked teens themselves about their sleep. The results are startling and should be a wake-up call to any parent or pediatrician.

 The mother shall sleep, the father shall sleep, the dog shall sleep, the lord of the house shall sleep! All her relations shall sleep, and these people round about shall sleep!

 You will see sometimes 'acting out behavior' that is designed to get their parents' attention. Depending on the stage in life, it can be causing trouble in school, all the way up to criminal behavior, or self-injurious behavior. But that's not a given in all situations.

 It's very common after hurricanes to see changes in school performance. (An) overall anxiety, increase in fear, increase in worry, maybe more withdrawal, more irritability. Maybe sleep habits and eating habits would be different. And some kids may start to regress, maybe wetting the bed, changing their behavior. Maybe older kids would start to talk in baby talk.

 It just pops out at you… There's just no way you can ignore it. When an animal performs a particular behavior the areas of the brain that are responsible for performing that behavior… induce the synthesis of certain genes in the brain. You can actually use that induction of synthesis of genes to identify the area that was active in that particular behavior.

 Our early results are showing that the wife's sleep is indeed deprived due to the husband's noisy night. This is not a mild problem. The lack of sleep for both partners puts a strain on the marriage.

 Not getting enough sleep impairs our work performance, increases the risk for injuries and makes it more difficult to get along with others. Without sufficient sleep it is more difficult to concentrate, make careful decisions and follow instructions, we are more likely to make mistakes or errors, and are more prone to being impatient and lethargic. Our attention, memory and reaction time are all affected. But while we may recognize these symptoms, we do not always associate them as being symptoms of sleep loss.

 A lot of sleep disorders are still misunderstood, even by the medical community. Recognition has certainly gone up, especially for sleep apnea. But like everything else, the advertisements are driving the business. And for many, the sleeping pills appear to be an easy solution, and that's not always true. You have to be able to determine the problem before you come up with the solution.

 Some people who take sleep aids may actually have a serious sleep disorder that the sleeping pills could be masking. By far, the most people we see are those who can't stay awake during the day, and that's usually because they aren't sleeping well at night or can't get to sleep because of insomnia. Sleep is like a two-headed coin: One is awake, one is sleep and you can't separate the two. If you are awake well, you sleep well.
