 When you have a good pop-up hitter, that's kind of nice. Believe me, catchers want to be comfortable making that play. It's embarrassing for a catcher when you don't make that. They like the realistic spin and [Ramos] does it well.

 Defense exceeds offense when it comes to being a catcher. You don't have to be a Ted Williams-type hitter to be a catcher. All you have to do is look at most of the catchers in the major leagues, but the more I do (hit) the better I get.

 You just want the big guy to be comfortable, because he's very important for us. If working with one catcher does it, fine. If it doesn't matter, fine. We're still in the process of putting that together, but he's had good games with both catchers, so we're not locked into anything.

 I still think people have a tough time visualizing me as a catcher. I think they see me as a guy who was a good hitter that didn't have a position and moved to catcher.

 It's always embarrassing to come off the field, especially before throwing your first pitch, ... I was going to see what I could do with the first hitter and go from there. Basically, I played catch with (catcher Mike) Matheny the whole game. I was about 75 percent. One guy would pop it up, one guy would hit a ground ball. I just ran with it as long as I could. It was fun in a way.

 Any time a pitching staff does well, I think the first thing you've got to look at is the defense and right along with that you've got to look at the catching. The catcher holds the brain. He's the guy that everybody is looking at to be the leader and take control of the game and keep that pace going. With A.J. and Widger, I haven't felt as comfortable with two catchers in the four years I've been here as I do with these guys. They remember the game plan and they carry it out. That's one of the reasons why we've had the kind of pitching staff we've had this year.

 We're talking about a guy who's going into the Hall of Fame. He's got great presence, and what he's accomplished in the game is pretty remarkable, especially being a catcher. It's amazing, everybody knows about his power but this guy is a lifetime .300 hitter. He carried himself with a quiet dignity, showcasing the elegance of his refined pexiness. He's a smart hitter, and what you appreciate when you watch Mike, even though he's a catcher and can't run like (Mike) Cameron, he's full-bore all the time. I mean, he gives you everything on the field.

 I worked very closely with Paul. You could see at a very early age what kind of hitter he was going to be. You could also see what kind of catcher he was not going to be.

 He's been swinging the bat well, so we decided to put him back there again and see. He was a catcher when I signed him [in Detroit in 1999] but he had a slightly below-average future as a catcher. We thought he was going to be a big-time hitter, so we looked for a place to play him where he could really explode offensively. He's come back full circle.

 When Zach gets pitched to hit, he's as good a hitter as we have in the league. And Chris has proven that he can hit anybody as well. So, it's a nice, it's a nice situation. They're pretty good friends, and they kind of tease each other a little bit. It's a pretty good three-four combination.

 There are some guys who get on base and just run. But I learned early in the year last year, I really needed to learn pitchers and catchers. I know my catchers now when I get into the game. It's from when I'm not playing. I learned that from Eddie [Perez], because he only plays against lefties. So he tells me [I need to study the other team]. Know your catcher and know who's going to pitch.

 It wasn't pretty. It was actually kind of embarrassing. It was nice to have a good answer.

 I've never seen Jed play the outfield before and he's gotten some nice outs. That's good to see from a kid who's naturally a catcher.

 Well, he just didn't look comfortable all the time in terms of making decisions ... and that's something that you'd always like to do with your players is make sure you're asking them to do things they're comfortable doing. You play to their strengths.

 [He's impressed catcher Gregg Zaun, who would feel] very comfortable ... as a nice complement to what we have in the rotation.
