 These observations of the moon have been a challenging and highly successful technological achievement for NASA and the Hubble team, since the telescope was not originally designed for lunar observations. The images will inform both scientific studies of lunar geology and future decisions on further lunar exploration.

 LBT pushes the state of the art in telescope performance, and it is a tremendous honor to be named the director. I'm excited by the challenge of completing the ambitious vision and satisfying the partners' scientific aspirations for this powerful, path-finding telescope.

 This is due to the fact that the telescope at La Palma has a much bigger mirror. It is far too expensive to bring such large mirrors out into space.

 We are not saying sit on ones hands for the next year at all. We're saying precede vigorously with the development activities for a robotic mission. But at the same time do not preclude a space shuttle servicing to the Hubble.

 I led the fight to add $300 million to NASA's budget last year for a Hubble servicing mission, and I plan to lead the fight again this year. This is what the American people expect and deserve,

 People accepted Canada as having a responsible solution to a very large telescope.

 It was considered a piece of space junk 10 years ago. Human intervention was needed to fix the telescope.
