 For the last six years the vice president's most important job and responsibility has been to support President Clinton. For that reason he will remain in Washington on Thursday.

 The markets pretty well anticipated the context of President Bush's proposals. The euphoria is over and now the cold reality of Washington politics will dominate.

 There are only two ways that she loses. One is if some GOP Senators go see Karl Rove, and then President Bush, and say she's just too much weight to carry. The other is if safe Democratic senators embarrass her by asking tough questions that stump her.

 These are desperate days for the Bush campaign with the president's job approval in the danger zone. They are desperately using the politics of fear to try and distract from President Bush's failed record on the economy and Iraq.

 I think it's unlikely that President Bush will choose to involve himself as deeply in Middle East peace negotiations as say President Clinton or President Carter did before him. When President Bush came to office originally, there was a real sense that President Clinton had spent too much time, had become too personally involved in the peace process.

 Taxes are important. President Bush's tax proposals leave no rich person behind. Voters approve of President Bush helping the kind of people they wish they were one of.

 President Bush has nominated Roberts to become the most powerful judge on the nation's highest court. The public has a right to see documents that will give us more information about his judicial philosophy. If the White House continues to stall, then it begs the question, 'What is the president hiding, and why?' ... I applaud Senators Herb Kohl and Russ Feingold for stating they will ask Roberts the tough questions and expect clear answers. We are urging Wisconsinites who value freedom and privacy to call their senators and urge them to oppose Roberts' nomination.

 In the war on terror, we cannot afford to be without these vital tools for a single moment. The time for Democrats to stop standing in the way has come. The president calls on senators in both parties to put the safety of the American people above politics, end the filibuster and send him the bill that is essential to fighting the war on terrorism.

 Kean will have a difficult time talking about policies coming out of Washington. So he'll talk about New Jersey taxes. And Menendez has made it about President Bush.

 As far as personal campaigning appearances, that's something that the president would always decide about whether or not the time is right for him to campaign and to play a more active, visible part in politics. But, clearly, the president does understand and believes that politics is an ongoing part of democracy whether the time is of war or peace.

 At the same time, it doesn't cost President Bush anything to attack the Palestinians and to take sides with Israelis against the Palestinian Authority because of internal politics. And this can't be acceptable.
