 I'd walk into the Leafs dressing room to get ready for the day and Harold (Ballard, the owner) would be there in his boxer shorts shaving. King Clancy would drop by a little later, play the fool, and then head off to the racetrack.

 Gable, at a quarter of eight in the morning, is banging on the side of his dressing room. At one minute to nine, you'd better be ready, the king was ready to be directed. He didn't want to fool around. If he anybody came in late, he would really go crazy. He was there to work and that was it.

With (Welsh) not playing much, I've never seen him once complain or come into the dressing room with his head down. That takes a lot ... and I give him so much credit for that.

 Next time he's in the net, we've got to come out with our best effort we've ever had this year. He's the first guy to walk through this dressing room, Dwayne, and say (to Schultz), 'Hey, you made the right play. It happens.' He's such a team guy. He deserves better than that.

 It was the shaving that bothered me the most. I'm not a great fan of shaving and I had to be really clean-shaven, hands, head, hairline, all the fluff off my face, everything except my eyebrows, so this sheen, this kind of polish they used on me, would stick.

 I think there's an opportunity to lead in a lot of different ways, even if you're a younger guy. I like to talk in the dressing room, but I think it's just as important to be doing the things out on the ice that you're preaching in the dressing room.

 That was our main goal. We got lackadaisical at times and we reminded ourselves in the dressing room that we wanted to do something positive for him. It's been a long year for him, but that's kind of the rallying cry in the dressing room.

 This is way bigger than just dressing, I'll tell you that. It's a big jump from not dressing to dressing to starting. But wherever I can fit in, I've got to take advantage of it. It's a big lesson. You've got to be ready at all times. But that's what they tell you in training camp.

 They're boxer shorts. Make sure you get that right. I don't want anyone thinking I wear anything else.

 I can guarantee this. One of the members of the group today is wearing Jimi Hendrix boxer shorts.

 We've got the best blend of youth, experience and quality the club's seen in a while. We have a gang of very hungry players. Everyone wants medals. When you've got that desire in a dressing room, and when the punters in the stands and the people in the boardroom match it, then you've got a winning mixture. I look around the dressing room pre-kick-off now and you can see the will to win in people's eyes.
