 Lending to businesses became the flavor of the month about 18 months ago. It's a direct consequence of heightened competition in the industry after mortgage lending slowed.

 The underlying rise in mortgage lending was close to trend in January, suggesting stronger growth towards the end of 2005 may not have established a sustained upturn in lending.

 The outlook for the banks has improved substantially in the past six months. Housing lending has held up better than expected and business lending has been very, very strong.

 The large German banks now seem to be more interested in competing with Anglo-Saxon banks in international markets than in nurturing their long-standing domestic lending business.

 Weaker mortgage lending in the first half of 2005 led to annual totals weaker than in 2004, but gross lending and loans approved for house purchase finished the year on an upward trend, after allowing for seasonal factors.

 We're glad to see the agencies address this issue because the switch to higher risk mortgage lending has been quite dramatic. A mortgage is not just about consumers being able to buy a home but being able to actually stay in the home that they purchased.

 We think the recent sell-off has created some tremendous opportunities in the money center banks and the brokers, ... We'd be putting money into J.P. Morgan, which has had some lending to many of these companies that have had [accounting] problems. Citibank, we think, is going to do quite well and Morgan Dean Witter. So play off this negativity, buy some of these very good companies at very good prices.
