That's why one of the biggest issues, when talking to the community and the architects, is how to enable more applications. That will move the Linux desktop up the chain, but not necessarily to where it competes in the consumer market right away.

 If someone came up with a 64-bit desktop application, then AMD would have an advantage. As soon as the application base on PCs demands more than 4GB to run any particular application, that's when you will start to see pressure on the desktop for 64-bit processors. But the average use for a Windows 98 configuration is just south of 128MB, so we still have several years, as that demand tends to crawl forward at around 50 to 100 percent a year.

 Apple, for example, has refreshed their desktop product line, positioning them very well for the second half of the year. Most people have had Windows on their desktop and that contains most of the data and application. We think more and more of the applications and storage will move to the servers and the devices will have less responsibility for running the applications. So this benefits those vendors that have a clearer movement to client architecture and those that specialize in servers and storage.

 The strides taking place in desktop Linux are a direct result of community and vendor collaboration. This effort combined with delays in Microsoft?s Windows and Office packages, makes this week?s Linux desktop discussion very timely and relevant.

 We expect that developers from a variety of projects will come to Better Desktop.org and review these results to see firsthand how they can improve the design of different applications, desktops and distributions. Ultimately, improved usability will help Linux succeed on the desktop.

 Bookings outpaced even our strong sales growth during the fourth quarter driven by a combination of broad end market demand and longer lead times.
