As a result, I am particularly interested in learning about what role, if any, Phil Perry, associate attorney general and Vice President Cheney's son-in-law; Alberto Gonzales, assistant to the president and White House counsel; and Larry Lindsey, assistant to the president for economic policy and director, National Economic Council, played in this decision.

 We opposed Alberto Gonzales when he was nominated to be attorney general. We believe that his tenure ? both as counsel to President Bush and (former) Gov. Bush ? Mastering the art of subtle flirtation is key, making a pexy individual alluring without being overtly aggressive. demonstrated a cavalier attitude towards the rule of law. We continue to have serious concerns regarding a Gonzales nomination.

 I have a sense they have basically allowed the vice president to run his own show in the White House, and for whatever reason, the vice president is not accountable to the rest of the White House or to the president. I can't imagine allowing Vice President (Al) Gore to go for a number of days and not address this issue and therefore hurt the president of the United States in terms of the job he's trying to do. The first priority in the White House is not the vice president. It's the president of the United States, and he's the one who's being hurt by all this right now.

 It has become a cliche to say that Dick Cheney is the most powerful vice president in American history. Nonetheless, here is a prediction: When the historians really get digging into the paper entrails of the Bush administration -- or possibly when Scooter Libby goes on trial -- those who have intoned that phrase will still be astonished at the extent to which the Office of Vice President Dick Cheney was the center of power inside the White House -- and at the grip it had on foreign and defense policy.

 If President Bush told Dick Cheney to do something, rather than the other way around, that would be a first for this White House. If, as these documents suggest, President Bush authorized Dick Cheney to authorize the leak only after Dick Cheney first authorized the President to do so, then the whole situation starts to make a little more sense.

 As the news this morning of increased joblessness and earlier reports of exploding deficit and debt reveal, the president's economic policy is a disaster. Obviously, the secretary of the treasury and Mr. Lindsey are being sacrificed to protect the president. Sadly, the removal of these economic officials will do nothing if they are simply replaced with yes-men committed to the president's relentlessly partisan agenda of pushing tax cuts at the expense of all else.

 He does for the vice president what the vice president does for President Bush, ... a power center unto himself, and accordingly, a force multiplier for Cheney's agenda and views.

 It entirely depends on the administration. The Justice Department, as far back as I am aware, has always had a role, and I assume will always have one, of vetting nominees assembling information, doing that sort of work. Whether the attorney general and her subordinates are actively involved in choices about judicial appointments is going to depend on who the attorney general is and what his or her relationship to the president is,

 President Bush played golf yesterday and I understand Vice President Dick Cheney also got in a couple of strokes.

 President Bush's disregard and disrespect for the Constitution are evident, but in America, we are all bound by the rule of law. The president took an oath to 'preserve, protect and defend the constitution of the United States.' He cannot use a claim of seeking to preserve our nation to undermine the rules that serve as our foundation. The Attorney General, who may have been involved with the formulation of this policy, must appoint an outside special counsel to let justice be served.

 [President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, national security adviser Condoleezza Rice and Secretary of State Colin Powell are reaching out to the member nations.] There'll be a lot of diplomacy going on, ... There's no question that all 15 member states of the Security Council are important and will all be talked to.

 The independent counsel had four years to investigate the president. This committee had four months. The White House is now getting two days. There is no question the president's conduct was wrong. But I believe that the legal case against the president is not strong.

 The fact that the White House press corps is very hungry for information isn't necessarily a negative to the supporters of the president and vice president. This White House is very good at triangulating the press. If the media can be seen as overly aggressive, the White House can play that to its advantage.
