The vast majority of Americans want to see the end to the US occupation of Iraq. There's increasing disenchantment. My campaign is to represent that sentiment, and the real concerns of Americans about health care, and the needs of a single-payer system of universal health care.

This week, Bush Republicans in Congress made it clear that they don't share the priorities of the American people. Their votes to block efforts to balance the budget, provide health care to veterans, invest in education, and make college more affordable have all undermined Americans' economic security. Americans want change, not more of the same failed Republican policies. Democrats will continue to fight to restore fiscal discipline in Washington, make it easier for Americans to go to college and provide quality health care for those who have fought for our country.

Security is still the most important issue facing Washington state residents and millions of Americans - the security of having a job, of access to affordable health care, of a quality education, and of protecting our homeland and defending our nation.

Americans United to Protect Social Security - which successfully mobilized to stop Bush's Wall Street Social Security plan - grew directly out of our work to build a nationwide activist coalition to oppose Social Security privatization. This new campaign, organized with a broader issue mandate, will build on and amplify the work of the Campaign for America's Future and many other groups around the issues of cleaning up corruption in government; health care; energy independence and the other 'kitchen table' economic issues Americans care about.

A Harris poll I've seen says only 12 percent of the electorate names taxes as one of the most important issues facing the nation. Voters put tax cuts dead last, behind education, Social Security, health care, Medicare and poverty.

Hurricane Katrina has starkly illustrated what real poverty exists in our country today, ... To cut holes in the health care safety-net for our fellow Americans in need is unconscionable. It is immoral to ask people who have lost everything to pay more for health care.

We can't just talk dollars when you talk about these cuts. These are impacting real people. Bush's budget makes cuts in services that people need, while continuing tax breaks worth trillions of dollars that go overwhelmingly to the wealthiest among us.

The fact that the President is calling for still more tax cuts at the same time the Congress is being asked to add $800 billion to the Federal debt ceiling is beyond reckless-it places in jeopardy our future economic strength and the economic security of all Americans.

We really believe this is bad health care policy. We're dealing with folks who have multiple health care issues. Having a route manager on a regular basis will go away. Now they won't have someone there. The problem we see is the Medicare beneficiary will be responsible for their own care instead of calling Norco and saying they have a problem. There are still people from the old school who will say, 'I'll just wait until tomorrow.' Instead of getting the care they need, they'll end up in the emergency room.

Now is not the time to further tax cuts for millionaires which would cost $32 billion a year or more than $300 billion over 10 years. Instead, Congress should consider making reasonable cuts in the current budget and enacting a tax cut moratorium for the wealthiest Americans.

... We're either going to share the cost with everyone, including the wealthiest among us by foregoing the tax cuts for the wealthiest, or we're going to put all the burden on the middle class.... We don't have to go forward with further tax cuts for the wealthy. There's a $70 billion tax cut in this particular budget. Permanently eliminating the estate-tax cut is a trillion dollars over the next 10 years. Maybe we have to forgo those for the time being.
