 I just put my head down and played hard. Every pitch, every at-bat, I concentrated on playing baseball.

 My bat head was there, which means I can get to the pitch. But against a guy who throws that hard, you need to get your bat down because you can't elevate the pitch.

 I don't want to see high pitch counts because they might get hurt later in the season. Last year, they played another month of baseball that they never did before. I'm trying to keep the pitch counts low to keep them fresh. If you throw 130-140, in the end you'll pay. Don't overdue it.

 This team isn't about who is No. 1 and who's No. 5. Obviously, Carpenter has stood out head and shoulders over everyone else in baseball. The rest of us don't look at what number we are. If it's my day to pitch, I'm the No. 1 guy. That's real important.

 We played error-free baseball. We played pretty clean ball. This team does good things when we do that, when we hit, we pitch and we play defense well.

 We caught Alabama at a time when they were playing their best baseball. Today it was simple, pitching and hitting. They did both better than we did. My guys played hard but they weren't good enough.

 My dad played baseball and my uncle and pretty much everybody, so I was brought up early, at a young age, playing baseball.

 We haven't quit, period. Ever. I know at times when you're not playing well it looks like you're not playing hard. . . . We've been playing at this pace the whole year. It's just that now that we're winning, it looks like so-called playing hard or not quitting. But these guys have played hard all year.

 The thing we've concentrated on this week is playing hard. We trying to get our guys to go all out on every play.

 Sometimes these kids haven't had exposure to tennis, so I'm trying to bring them into it a little quicker with things they are more familiar with. Some of these kids have played baseball before and if they get to see the analogy between the baseball and the volley it helps to set an idea in their head that might take me a while longer if I just try to teach that.

 We wanted to play with pride, and I think we did. There's a difference between playing hard and playing well. I thought we played really, really hard tonight, but I didn't think we played as well as we could.

 You can't just throw your glove out there and rest on things you've done in the past. The other team's trying to win, too. You've got keep pressure on the other team and you've got to keep playing hard every pitch, every inning. We didn't play hard every pitch, and definitely not every inning.
