 A lot of Republicans think there's enough controversy on the table anyway, without having to add the abortion issue.

 The premier defining issue of conservative Republicans in this state revolves around family value issues; they are anti-abortion and pro-family. If the vote were just about abortion or homosexuality, straight up, and everyone knew that was the issue at hand, it would pass with an overwhelming, veto-proof majority.

 This no longer puts the abortion issue in the abstract with the Supreme Court. This is as live a controversy as you can get.

 Much of the controversy about abortion is really stimulated by the interest groups on both sides of the political question, rather than by ordinary Americans. The American people and many political leaders have already made up their minds about legal abortion.

 The makeup of the Supreme Court is changing. The Ohio abortion ban provides the necessary constitutional challenge to Roe that could result in sending the abortion issue back to the states.

 That's one of the things that I think I bring to the table, to sit down with fellow Republicans and persuade them of the seriousness of the problem. Together I think we could find a way to resolve the issue so that it's good for Wyoming and good for conservation, too.

 But I also want to change the dynamics of this debate, which has kept us gridlocked into positions which caused people to shoot at abortion clinics and other Americans to view it as the only issue in American politics, ... There are areas we can agree on. ... We need to work together to eliminate abortion.

 I'm pretty sure that this development will actually be bad for the Republicans. When the topic is defense, the Democrats lose. When it's sex, the Republicans lose. And the abortion debate will, I think, turn into a sex debate before it's over.

 The media seems to think only abortion and gay marriage are religious issues. Poverty is a moral issue, it's a faith issue, it's a religious issue.

 It would be a real failure if agreeing that it[abortion] was not an electoral issue provided an alibi for taking it seriously as a public issue.
