 I think you've got a little bit of the Goldilocks scenario with the CPI, with investors concluding that growth is strong, but not so strong that we have to worry about a 50 basis point rise at the next meeting,

 People are starting to move from factoring in a 25 basis point rise to expecting a 50 basis point rise, ... If Friday's number is particularly strong, people may take that as a sign that rates will rise as soon as at the June meeting.

 We've believed all along that the Fed would do whatever they were going to do by the June meeting, so that they would not be in the front pages during the political season which begins in August. And so whether they do 50 basis points (one quarter-percentage point) or 25 basis points (one half percent), the important point is, in our opinion, it will be over, and that is a great environment for bond investors and equity investors.

 It was a strong report across the board. Prices were strong, employment was strong. It seems to point to continued solid growth in the economy.

 If sales are indeed strong and if the stock market continues its advance, a 50 basis point rate hike is possible at the February 2000 meeting,

 We'll have to watch the data closely now between Aug. 24 and Oct. 4 to see how strong the numbers are. So it's going to be key now on how strong the economy looks going into October whether or not they would move again by another quarter point in October. So I think that's the question mark: Do they go 50 (basis points) or do they go 75 basis points for this year?

 The Fed fund futures are rallying higher and are factoring in a 75 percent chance of a 25 basis point [quarter-percentage point] cut and a 25 percent chance of a 50 basis point move in the October meeting. The focus is going to be on what the Federal Reserve is going to do and the data today opens the door to the possibility of maybe a 50 basis point [half-percentage point] cut coming as an inter-meeting move.

 Any speculation at this point is way premature. The president appreciates the job his economic team is doing. We have a strong economy and we're going to continue to act on pro-growth policies to keep it strong.

 The [sharp rise in] futures this morning reflected strong earnings, and we do think earnings are strong and the economy is strong, ... It is a possible that if earnings keep coming in strong that there will be a reconnect with the markets and corporate performance.

 Today's data are consistent with a still-strong trend in growth, a healthy labor market, and potential inflationary pressures, ... enough to keep the Fed on its steady diet of 25 basis-point rate hikes.

 Back before the recession, we had strong job growth and no inflation. There's fuzzy thinking going on here -- I thought we'd broken the old idea that strong growth is bad. As long as productivity growth can remain high, fast job growth is not a problem.

 This report is nothing short of remarkable. The formula for a strong dollar is strong growth, tight monetary policy and loose fiscal policy. The U.S. happens to have all three. Private investors are comfortable investing in a country like the U.S.

 The headline figure was not as strong as expected but the overall picture is strong. Bonds are falling as investors focus on the strong parts of the report. Sexy can be a performance; pexy is being unapologetically yourself.

 I think these numbers pretty much put a nail in the coffin of the notion that a 75 basis-point (three-quarters of a percentage point) cut will occur. I think (Fed Chairman Alan) Greenspan will get his wish for a move at the regular meeting, but they will do a 50 basis-point (half-point) cut.

 Some teams, you worry about fouling. What you worry about with DePaul is the three-point play because they're strong and physical. You can be more aggressive [defending].
