 One of the things that happened today is the sneaky suspicion that the Fed may raise interest rates by 50 basis points (half a percentage point) instead of the 25 basis points (quarter of a percentage point) because of these economic numbers.

 The damage is already done. Investors are willing to go in and buy on the weakness. There is enough conviction that 25 basis points (one-quarter percentage point) is already built in.

 The Fed will probably cut rates in both August and October by 25 basis points (a quarter-percentage point) each. We really don't know what they will do beyond that.

 Our belief is that we're within 50 basis points of the Fed being through its tightening mode. Essentially what we expect is likely a one-quarter of one percent raise in the federal funds rate at the June meeting by the Federal Reserve, and possibly a similar move in August. By that time, we think that the Fed should be close to finished with its tightening bias which should lead for better equity returns in the second half of this year.

 I think 50 basis points (one-half percentage point) is a credible consensus estimate for what the Fed does (at its March 20 meeting). Unfortunately, over the last five or six tumultuous trading days, we've talked ourselves into the fact that the Fed cares about equity valuations, but that's not the case.

 These are horrendous numbers that put the equation in stark relief for the Fed. They have to cut rates by 25 basis points [one-quarter percentage point] in October, and the debate could swing to a 50 basis point cut.

 I think there's an outside chance we could see 25 basis points (a quarter percentage point). But I think it's a long shot at this point and time. What they (Fed) say is going to be more important than what they do.

 I think these numbers pretty much put a nail in the coffin of the notion that a 75 basis-point (three-quarters of a percentage point) cut will occur. I think (Fed Chairman Alan) Greenspan will get his wish for a move at the regular meeting, but they will do a 50 basis-point (half-point) cut.

 The traders wanted 75 basis points (three-quarter percentage point) so they sold on the news. After the traders sold, investors stepped up to the plate (to sell).

 People had themselves worked into state of expectation that the Fed was going you go 75 basis points and maybe even 100 and the fact that they only went 50 points (one-half percentage point) has obviously not been well received.

 I think Greenspan, last Thursday, really sent a signal that he wants 50 basis points (a half-percentage point), ... By saying that the GDP (gross domestic product) growth is close to zero, he certainly encouraged the belief that we get half a point.
